Using .net and .org effectively

Evening all,

For the purpose of this post, let's say I've just bought the domains playpoker.net and playpoker.org.

Firstly, would you use the .net or the .org to build your main site on? I'm guessing it's purely down to personal preferance but I'd just be interested to know

My main question is this though. Let's say I use the .net for my main site ... is there any advantage (SEO or otherwise) of redirecting the .org to the .net URL?

I can't really see any other than capturing those users who type in the .org address directly ... and I don't really think there will be many of them seeing as it's not a .com address.

I hope that makes some sort of sense, but in case it doesn't give me a shout and I'll clarify things.

By personal preference, I would pick a .com domain. As per opinion, it doesn't really matter which domain extension you use, but the online reputation as well as the quality of anything offered will. As per site proper classification, .com would be more appropriate if you are putting up an online commercial business, .net for a network, .org for indicating an organization.

Well, if the .org is an old domain and already has a considerable number of backlinks and there's a constant traffic coming in, by using permanent 301 redirect, it could give an advantage. But, if both are new, I would say none at all until the .org has gain enough reputation and popularity to pass to the .net.

For me, I would use .org and .net on high traffic search traffic terms as domain names and develop a site like that.

eg if "fancy pants" was a high search term with potential for traffic to convert to high earnings, I would go after the .org .net.

Otherwise I really don't see the point of registering a .org or .net unless it was to secure a brand name.
