Default Pissed of the big sites that want share of our business

I know that this topic is discussed in other threads but my main keywords were eaten by multimillion news traffic website that has nothing to do with gambling. For only 1 month their article became on top of the SERP without single backlink. I must satisfy me with the second position and I don't know if I will be able to be 1st again. My site has so much topical authority around that keyword, so many texts all related to gambling, backlinks and so on. Why is Google doing this? Why are they talking about topical authority while backlinks is the only thing that's working.

The recent niche authority updates have moved the dials a little bit but it hasn't changed the overall picture, thin pages on high authority news sites are still dominating and backlinks do still seem to be the only thing that work right now.

Are you refering to general media sites or gambling sites? as a multi milllion gambling site probably deserves to be the, however if its the news and magazine type sites then this is the next new spam tactic.. effectively they are doorway pages piggy backing off of the sites authority, shoudl sponsored content be classed as authority?

I am referring to news sites that don't have anything related to gambling. They just create one single post and add some random casinos that absolutely don't answer the search intent of the users. In my particular case the site makes more 1 million monthly traffic and has more than 25k backlinks. Only for 1 month that site with his post became 1st in almost all GEO's without a single backlink to that page. I hope that Google will soon realize that this is not right

Issue is, if anything the changed google have been making lately have helped the position of these sites rather than hinder, so it might be a long wait sadly. Let's hope these news sites don't run an affiliate-bashing article at any point in the future eh, people in glass houses and all that.

I’m not the SEO person on our team but asking around and it seems topical authority is what is becoming more and more important.
