Question Google Keyword planner vs Other keyword tools

    Hi All

Happy New year! hope youve all had a good start to the year considering our current situation

I have a question which im sure has been asked before.

I'm doing some keyword research however when i compare the search volumes for google keyword planner to that of for example SEM Rush the numbers are hugely different

i know their data isn't always accurate but there seems to be huge differences. for example Google keywords state 500 average monthly search vs SEM rush that states like 10.

any advice, tips would be super helpful

    thanks all in advance

    James

I believe you can't fully believe any of these tools, James (although others here may be able to point you towards one or two that are more accurate than others). It's been proven a number of times over the years.

The best you can hope for is a guide...and using GWT (and maybe others, but I have no experience) once you have traffic to ascertain what keywords you're ranking for and how many impressions you're getting.

And when you have data...I bet you will see keywords/phrases that tools tell you have zero...but you're getting impressions from them...or the impressions you are seeing will be well out of volume line with what the tools are telling you.

I would suggest one of the best ways to determine your keywords is.....think like a searcher.

    That's really good suggestion!

We using Ahrefs and also see a huge difference in numbers. So we try to check competitors to see what keywords do they use, check SERP overal and it helps.

I have tried keyword research using google keyword planner and other tools like semrush, as well as ahref, with the same location option, semrush is quite similar to google keyword planner, ahref has bigger difference.

Usually I compare the results from a few different planners, but I also try to think logically about the keywords from the point of view of someone who is searching the web. You can also come up with some good long-tail ideas just by playing around with Google’s suggested search terms in the dropdown when you are searching.
