Google PR Update 02/08/2012

Atleast for me nothing. My website is still PR3.

What was a big hit for me was the 26-27 July Panda refresh. Almost all of my rankings took a hit of 4-5 positions.

4 of my sites lost 1 PR and 1 gained PR.

The funny thing is that the ones that lost page rank where the ones I had removed paid links from....Makes no sense!

Interesting.

My opinion is that google sees this as those pages containing less information about the topic the anchor text of the removed link.

I would be interested to know if those pages that had links removed now rank lower on the keywords associated with the anchor texts removed from those pages.

Rick you raise an interesting point but unfortunately I can't confirm if that is the case because the keywords were so diverse and in most cases weren't even relative to the page and many were poker terms like rakeback, full tilt poker etc.
I always found it weird in the first place why a poker site would want to add links on casino sites that have either none or very little poker related content.

General terms for links are ok at times, but if the anchors were not very relevant on the pages, then Google can see that you had non-relevant outgoing links which were likely not put there for visitors.....

I never put links for roulette on a blackjack page, unless the terms are for say other "live games" or other "RTG Games"...

Also I wonder if the drop in PR may have been coming for those pages anyway and it just happened that the links were pulled just before the drop??

Some speculation in the above obviously....

Totally agree with you on both counts. The majority of those links were done years ago and were just renewed annually and I never paid much attention to them until the whole panda/penguin thing and thats when I decided to start removing them as they expired, before google caught me
It is possible I was still nailed anyway and I wasn't quick enough.

If you want to take a page or 2 and play about with a link or 2 and test a few anchors to see if an outgoing link with the correct anchors can help the page let me know...

I made out pretty well. All sites but 1 gained PR which stayed the same. One thing I thought was a little strange is I had a PR0 site across the board. After the update the homepage is now PR1 almost all first level inner pages went to a PR2? Go figure. I have very little links pointed to interior pages but your point to having the text align with content may have had something to do with that.

Yeah I think that the popular believe that PageRank represents only the PR of links pointing towards a particular page is incorrect. The content and its quality are also represented in the PR.

Agreed - if there's not quality content going up regularly you won't see an increase.

Personally I believe that there is a separate score for "trust" and another score for 'quality' and several other 'scores' that google uses for ranking.

The toolbar displayed PR, IMO is nothing more more than a Public Relations sore that means absolutely nothing to ranking in the google SERP.

The 'real' PR score for a page is only known by google and they ain't talking about it.

IMO, If google's publicly displayed PR score were an accurate representation of what google thought of a page then PR1 pages would not be outranking PR5-6 pages for the same targeted keywords.... and you can see this happening all the time.

I have been saying for YEARS how smart Google was to create that little green bar.

Since it was being manipulated like it was and SEO's could show their clients verifiable results, all seo's recommended to the world that they were the better search engine. That stupid green bar was the main driving force to make Google what it is today.

And the effects of that are still felt today since every little tweak in the toolbar pr brings a new rush of forum posts and threads on what it means to the seo world.

The value of what you see in the little green bar is not near as important to Google as the fact that we are having this discussion again.

I totally agree with that. I don't think PR's completely irrelevant, but it's far far far less important than many webmasters think.
