I was sticking to 12px Aerial, but someone told me they strained to read it. It is black text on an off white background. To me, larger looks untidy, but if people can't read it properly, then maybe it should be larger?

I use scalable font sizes.
That way the user/device can decide what font size is best for the user.
I use 12pt also. Anything larger I agree it doesnt look as nice.

you should never use pt, those are for printed media.
font sizes should be ems or (rems for the css junkies) or percentages (to have them scale automatically)
pixel based font-sizes are not scaleable afaik.
Do you actually use pure black? Most sites use #111111 to #777777 which makes it slightly grayinsh easier for the eye. I believe it comes down to personal preference. There are many people that like to read freaky fonts, I myself like those like Verdana that are just clean. Anyways you will never find everyone agree on one font, so choose what pleases the majority of your traffic.
Users have such a wide choice of different screen sizes, different screen configurations and even different operating systems, that IMO all you can do is try to make your code as universal as you can.
12px Aerial is easily comprehended by the audience, so I don`t see a reason why not to use it.
