The iPhone grab hold!

Grab hold of this new technology the iPhone represents. Multi-Touch technology is on the way! Revolutionizing the way we interact with computing devices. Steve Jobs put a lot of apples (excuse the pun) into this one.

The competitive nature between Jobs and M$ is alive and well. The unveiling of M$ surface is due out sometime in November. The two technologies are very similar. M$ surface is an interactive touch screen computing device. It won’t be long before M$ comes out with a cell phone of their own.

The technology behind both is going to blow your mind. Imagine grocery shopping with no checkouts, clerks, or lines? Restaurants may have interactive tables no menus? Laptops less than inch thick with no keyboard!
Ironically Vegas will be implementing M$ surface probably within the next year.

The days of your standard PC are numbered. Multi-Touch technology is on its’ way!

BTW: Just wait to see the changes some major U.S grocery stores will be making within the next year. Can’t say what but it will blow your mind.

its pretty amazing indeed. i can't wait until i can go anywhere with my hand held internet computer that gets online at true high speed no matter where i am. they have made attempts at this now, but it really does not exist yet to the general public. i bought the sony mini computer recently, it cost $2,000 and is small enough to almost put in your pockt, but not quite. it is small enpigh to bring into the store with you though. i was so excited becuase i was going to be able to acces the web anywhere i went. and supposedly at decent speeds. what a joke. the reception was through cingular and was either very slow or not working at all. i returned it in less than a week. i really want something like this big time, so when the day comes that the technology is there consistently, i will be all over it! just can't wait...

The keyboard is a fairly advanced and efficient way to create unique sentences and phrases - such as the ones that WE are posting into this forum now.

From what I've seen of the i-phone demos that have enough issues getting 10 digits for phone numbers on the screen being used reliablly due to the lack of tactile feedback to the typer.

I can see the touch screen replacing the mouse or graphical point - but the keyboard too ? Really?

Touch screen technology is certainly an interesting topic in general. An artist friend of mine uses a large touch screen as a drawing pad, and it looks really great. He gets the combination of the feel of drawing with his styllus and the pad but the advantages of the results being digital rather than just on paper.

In terms of gambling in particular, I think the use of touch screen technology in the PokerTek tables really marks an eventual transition to a more high-tech environment in the land casinos. With this transition I think we'll see easier cross-over marketing with more land-based players also playing online and online players having an easier time adjusting to land-based play.

The other item that comes to mind with the iPhone is what it means for mobile gaming. I'm not that familiar with the mobile gaming side of things, but I would think the technology for them is different than just loading a website onto your phone -- so with the advancement of web capabilities on mobile phones I wonder if mobile gamers would switch to just connecting to a traditional online gaming site and playing as though they were online directly rather than playing mobile-specific varations. Mobile-specific games might still provide an advantage to the player in terms of having graphics and design more suited to the small size screen. Is this how the iPhone works -- the internet connection would allow the same type of game play as if you were connected through a computer?

I bet voice recognition will replace the keypad. Right now on my cell phone I can make calls by saying a name. Way too primitive to replace a keyboard for entering textual messages right now, but that technology is getting better fast.

I have a cheap Motorola, but if you watch the presentation and think about it, part of the reason you have a cheap Nokia is because of how hard phones have sucked until now!

Maybe for basic applications - like making a call.

But when you consider the complexity of even one language (English) and the number of words that sound the same or very similar when allowing for accents makes it tough.

Then we get into the internet and can you imagine tying in a web URL - or coding a web page via VR software ?


The problem is not in the recognition of the sounds - but in creating a neural net that replicates human thinking and understands verbal context in the same way a (say) 10-year old human might.

I suspect that we will be using keyboard for complex applications and interfaces until we retire - as it allows very specific and exact inputs - which is exactly what computers need.

LOL - my kind of phone... after all day in front of a pc I don't need the hassle of worrying about viruses and firewalls for my phone too.

Yup I agree. I always use the voice dialer on my Nokia. I think NFC (Near Field Communications) will also play a very important part in the next year or two...example, where you swipe your phone across checkouts and stuff to pay for goods.

I think the IPhone is great technology, and it looks awesome... but coming from a Canadian perspective, I do not think the service for a Canadian would be worth it... at least until a Canadian cell phone carrier picks it up and makes it a bit cheaper. I have a Palm Treo 700 which is awesome for my business, but I find myself paying ridicilous bills every month even with that, and I do not think the IPhone will be any better...

I like to think so in the form of a keypad. The technology behind the iPhone is very interesting. I don’t see the cell phone in iPhone but rather a fluid multimedia device with extraordinary capabilities. It also provides the stepping-stone for more advanced technologies.

I must agree with Michael some voice recognition software is simply amazing. If I hadn’t witnessed it for myself I wouldn’t have believe it. Some of the IT guys I know took me on a tour of our Regional Hospitals. Simply amazing! Doctors walks in “computer log me on” “open word document” “find patient” etc… They literally do not use a keyboard ever I was told. In regards to saying “two” as opposed “too” the program auto corrects or the operator can state as in the number or put the word in context. For accents again the program auto learns your voice patterns.

These programs are very capable. One can do by voice rather by keyboard.
