Question Do you own a laptop computer?

Just this week I bought a new laptop computer. No surprise, the technology keeps improving, and it is lightning fast compared to the desktop I've been using.

Historically, I've brought a small desktop to ICE, along with a 24" monitor, to use in our stand for demos. But not this year. I'm pleased that this year I'll be toting a new laptop with a 5GHz 4 core (8 thread) processor, 16 GB of memory, a 512 GB solid state drive, topped off with a beautiful 15.6 inch display plus other goodies like the usual (now days) built in fingerprint reader, camera and microphone, all weighing in at under 3.6 pounds.

So, for this week's poll, I'm curious to know whether folks own a laptop, after just joining the crowd this week myself. And, assuming you do own one, how long you have owned it. And please share the technical details of what you have in a post as well.

I have always worked exclusively on a laptop, a Mac to be more specific. I find it just as fast, if not faster than some desktops.

For work purposes, I use a laptop and have done so for quite a while. I like having the ability to choose where I work from. Of course, there are some things where a desktop computer would be a better option, bur that really depends on what one plans to do with it.

I switched to Apple laptops (13") some 6-7 years back and never looked back.

Bought a new MacBook Air with M1 chip last year and am really happy with its performance.

I prefer laptops as I take it with me everywhere I go and 13" is a perfect size for both work and flexibility to carry it around.

I own half a dozen laptops anywhere from < 2 to ~18 years old.

I am down to only one desktop these days and only 3 active laptops in use regularly, but each has a purpose.

I have stripped and thrown away more 5-10 year old laptops and associated parts in recent weeks then I have ever owned...(garage needs cleaning)...but like profrb, I still own a pretty sizeable list of old ones too. Most of them various OS like XP, Win 7 or a few flavors of linux. I had kept most of them for various parts, cables and doodads or screens for when a client had an emergency need since many screens are interchangeable even among manufactures.

I currently have a laptop which I recently had to overhaul a little, had to replace the lid because the hinge had some serious issues so while I had it apart replaced the 1TB data drive with a 2TB as well as a new battery. (dislike that most manufactures require a teardown now for the battery).

Since my current system is a 7th generation I7 I am considering replacing it with a newer version, or possibly moving to an I9, or at least a cheaper 9th or 10th generation I7.

The main reason I have delayed this is that I am waiting for the right model to come along that does a much better job of supporting 4 monitors. My current system supports 2 and does a good job, one being a vga connection and the other as HDMI.

Many manufacturers are now adding video port and thunderbolt which will as the chipsets mature just a bit more support 4 better, but most of the models I have looked at so far do not do this very well.

I have also looked at a few docking ports or video ports, but since most of the better rated ones of those are in the $500 range my research has shown them to be better at duplicating screens and those that do handle the extending seem to rely solely on proper ports and chipsets on the laptop so they are may not necessary in my specific scenario providing I make the right choice in laptop model.

I considered just building a desktop for the office, but want the portability of being able to unplug and go with my main system in case the day ever comes that I can leave the county for a few days.

side note: If anyone has a laptop setup they are currently using with 3 or more monitors, contact me privately so I can learn more of what works for you.

I have no interest in hearing about any iToys, as I run only straight windows on any of my main systems or linux for specific functions.

Over the years I've had a few laptops which I use for traveling, which I do manage to get most work done on, but the daily driver and personal preference is still a desktop.

The last laptop I bought was a hp spectre which is small enough to take anywhere without hassle which is what i need. I haven't had a PC for a while ..maybe I'd spend more time sitting at desk than armchair if I did

Bought a laptop several years back that I don't use that much anymore, because I mainly use a all in one desktop computer.

Yes, use a PC mostly but bought a basic laptop years ago for when travelling and also convenience of having elsewhere in the house. It's very basic but works fine for what I need it for.

I bought a laptop for a couple of extended trips about 6 years ago.
It was OK - but nothing on a desktop with 2 monitors.

It's underpowered today - and we don't travel much - but I still have 1 or 2 uses for it.

Ditto... Toshiba 17" 2.2ghz i7, 16gig ram and non SSD. It's fine for a few things but not much. We've moved, and I've been using it to connect to Netflix etc, connected to the TV's HDMI. Need a new TV but been super busy with other stuff, and haven't had time.

There has been a few occasions in the last year or so, when, a laptop would be great, I just haven't bit the bullet. Now though, I don't need one. If I was to update, I'd buy a new desktop. It makes more sense.
