Default NBA Tipping site having trouble getting sign ups

    Hi all,

First post here. Just looking for a bit of advice or stories from others who were in our situation. After three years of nightly tipping we are trying to generate a bit of revenue through affiliate links to the best price for each nights tip. So far after a month of the season starting we are getting fairly good clicks through the betting sites (some sites have 500+ views) but no one is signing up. From research before I was hoping for around 1% sign ups to views ratio so im not expecting high numbers but to not have a single person seems odd. Are there any fundamental mistakes im making? We get around 300-500 page views a night and am not looking to get rich but its a fun project to go alongside our NBA tipping.

    Thanks

You wont get many sign up because they will usually come to me and get them free

To add to that, you dont have any CTA for anyone to sign up.. not that I can see.. and you design looks like a late 90s warez site

What do you mean they will get them free from you? We dont charge for tips. Sorry if im misunderstanding here!

We have a resources page for sites and post nightly tips where we link to the best priced site which we hope people will then sign up through. As for the design its just a wix site which we do ourselves. Do you feel its worth getting a professional in to create a site for us?

    Thanks again for the advice!

The site is fine for what he needs, I'm guessing hes sending his Twitter followers there and thats whats getting him his page views each night? You'll get some signups but you really need some more adds on that home page, at the top would be good and also make some kind of free bet table on the homepage, shwoing all of the bookmakers you promote. Bet365 is hard to get signups because so many people have accounts with them so put some of the others on the homepage.

One note about the site is that if your just sending some social traffic there its ok but if you want to really make something of it then you should ditch wix and get a decent wordpress site or something, check out the flytonic themes for wordpress they have some that would be ideal for you.

Yep most of our traffic is from twitter which we are pretty active on. it does seem like most people have accounts with the main guys such as Bet365. Some really good points about free bets and more going on with the homepage so will work on that for sure. Have been reading around the forum and have seen flytonic mentioned a few times so will have to look into that! As for Mr Bean its just on the monthly review with a meme to draw attention to our podcast to break up the text a bit

You are better off selling your own tips, also you seem to be targeting non USA visitors, the USA would be your biggest market for NBA, We get a few visits from China, korea, Spain etc where NBA is pretty popular but nothing converts like the USA, your site design mimics that of a pirate site it looks untrustworthy.. you just need to change the colors.but that's my personal opinion

Twitter visitors are not the best for converting in my experience but then i target the gambling aspect side to generate revenue.. and really with these types of sites you need large amounts of traffic to convert anything,

    OK - I just took a look at nbatips01.com
Have you ever looked at your site? I mean really looked at it with fresh eyes - and not as the creator of the site?
    - The dark background with bright red text is hard to read - and not likely to keep visitors for long.
    - The pop-up for an email address is annoying (especially only 10 seconds after I've arrived)
    - I could not see any attempt to sell a betting account on the home page.

The design and layout of your site are almost pushing a new reader away - it screams out NEW KID WHO HAS DISCOVERED HTML RECENTLY AND WANTS BRIGHT COLOURS AND 10 DIFFERENT FONTS PER PAGE - in other words ... not an authority site.

    On the positive side
    - you are getting a stream of readers (well done that's a tough challenge)
    - your tips seemed to be well written and attempted to explain the game and pick

But tips sites will not convert 1% of visits to accounts - not anything like that - because if you are any good many of the readers will be repeat visitors who may signup for an account once or twice but will read your site many times a week.

We get about 1/10th of 1% at our tips site.

I'd have to agree with most of the comments already made. You'd need to take a fresh look at your site and maybe do some research on user experience/usability to make sure that your site ticks the right boxes. The good thing is that you should see a lot of this information in any decent analytics package which will tell you where people are ditching you or percentage coming back. Everything is based around user experience now, so first and foremost start there. Consider sending a questionnaire to your visitors to see what they find useful. Hope that helps

Thanks for all the advice and comments so far, cant disagree at all with what has been said! Gooner, you are right in everything you say even if it hurts to hear it! The text does need to change. Theres a few easy wins such as taking the newsletter pop up off which can be fixed right away. it really seems most important is getting the content onto a better designed site and more calls to action on the front page. So far it has kind of been put together one bit at a time with no real theme or consistency. The content itself is really very good and our twitter engagement is fairly strong so once the look has been figured out that should improve things.

The comments above are really so valuable and are really appreciated. If theres any more of course I would love to keep hearing them. Being new to the forum I wasnt sure what to expect but the advice has been so helpful

HI all, I have been working on the changes as suggested. The site is in the process of being redesigned to make it more user friendly and less ugly looking. Part of what im doing on the site is all the seo, which is kind of learning as I go. Im planning to do a blog post on the behind the scenes of the site each month Pat Flynn style. My first one is about 2000 words long and can be found here http://www.nbatips01.com/#!Monthly-R...f2c000e9284eca

Hopefully I will look back on it in a few years and see all the obvious rookie mistakes I have made, but for the time being do you feel this would be interesting to users of the site more interested in how sites like ours work? Is the content too simple or not detailed enough? Is it even interesting?

Would love your feedback on my article!

OP again here. We have made suggested changes such as getting rid of the pop up, made links to site on the home page and got rid of the red text on black. Thanks for the suggestions so far guys, the site is so much better already.

Is there anything else we should add/take away?

Thanks for all you input again!
