Ah yes, a Hector Lavoe classic

If I only knew how many times I've danced to this...

In the world of salsa dancing, you hear this song repeatedly. I believe I chose it as my birthday dance 2 years ago Good times!

Well, merengue's really a no brainer once you start learning salsa because you march with your feet and everything else is about leading some partnerwork which you'd be learning in salsa anyways.

I would definitely recommend it. It's super fun, friendly people for the most part, a much safer environment for dancing and great cardio

Plus, there are great performers out there to watch as well as excellent live bands.

Here's a video of a performance I enjoyed last year while in New York:

The video looks pretty cool! But with my lack of coordination and flexibility! It will take me a while longer!

You'd be surprised what a little determination and hard work will get you. That could be you after 2 years of hard work.

Plus, dancing socially is even better

Just think of the lovely partners you'll be able to hold and twirl ever way... It should give you added incentive to learn

If only salsa clubs promoted the fact that the women to men ratio is 4 gorgeous ladies: 1 guy there would be a much higher rise in male participation in every city out there.

Just as a general comment to those of you looking to learn to salsa dance- it takes a lot of patience and perseverance.

Sorry to say that the basic step is the hardest thing to learn. You'd think that was good news, but it's harder than you think. Here's what I used to do during my first 6 months which allowed me to pick it up about 3x as fast as others:

I would practice the basic to a variety of different salsa songs in the mirror. The reason for the mirror is to see whether your steps:

    A. are on time with the music because this is THE most important part of it
    B. they look good and how they're supposed to

You end up seeing a lot of weird body movement, hip shaking at the wrong time and funky steps because people never really see how they look. Take a look at some videos on youtube of great salsa dancers such as Magna Gopal, Leon Rose, Sekou McMiller and others that come up when you do your searches to see how it looks when it's done well

I used to do this mirror basic step to music thing every day for an hour at least for the first few months. It can really make an impact. Just remember, knowing the step isn't enough, you gotta be able to do it to the music without counting, thinking about your feet, or being aware of it. It should be automatic...haha you gotta feeeel it.
