Redirecting Site

Let me ask this question and get some opinions.

back in maybe 2002 or earlier I was using a free domain (50megs), before I closed the free domain account I created an htaccess file to redirect it to my current domain I think around 2007 I did this.

With all the google changes I'm not sure if its hurting my site these days or not. Never did before.

Searching on the old free domain about 160 places list a link for it in Google, including some old press releases.

Should I leave it as I was thinking of asking them to delete the htaccess file.

No going back if deleting it causes more harm than good.

Perhaps run it through link detox and see if it is coming up as toxic

I don't think so, I looked for a free version, I ended up buying a months worth of credits. The good thing is I disavowed links for my poker site and it is showing progress.

A 301 redirect is not harmful, if the backlinks on the old domain are safe. Best thing to do is check the backlink profile of the old domain yourself. Put it in Ahrefs and Majestic and see what pops up. If the old backlinks are spam, i would definitely delete the redirect.

Yes, usually permanent redirection 301 is very safe way, if the domain have healthy backlinks story and healthy domain history.
When you buy domain name on the secondary market, always check the history. Please use wayback machine tool, just to check the history of content, at the beginning. It's not wise to buy domain that was de-indexed, some time ago. However, buying dropped domains (that was abandoned by owners) is usually more safe.
301 re-direct is great if you own domain for years before, you know the history of this domain and want to re-direct everything to the very new domain.

I would suggest make sure the redirected domain is not indexed I have seen articles about indexed and redirected domains causing major issues later on

When it comes to disavowing links, I read from the article that you can't just use disavowing tool because there are consequences that must be considered before using it, I'm wondering what is it?

Are you asking why I disavowed? Or, what consequences are there for using the disavow tool?
