Actually it is possible to do exactly what OP stated. An influx of social signals, real ones, can do this in the short term. It does not last though and must be done by legitimate users, bot traffic doesn't do it.

I'm telling you. It can work. If you can get hundreds, or better yet thousands of legitimate social signals, a site can jump up Google SERPS in very short period of time.

There are SEO tests doing exactly this from a few years back.

Again, this effect does not last long and fades. Also, it has to be real users, who engage with the page, no bot bullshit.

I can not seem to find the experiment I am talking about and wanted to share, oh well. I did however find another experiment that shows there is some net effect to social signals in the short (48hr) and longer term.
