freshman question but I see many variations on the solutions: some places call them "fruit slots", others "awards with prizes", "pub slots"... do all 3 reel 1-line slots fall into these categories? If not, how do you know to tell the difference?

AWPs are a unique category of slots who's payouts are tied to the amount they've taken - i.e. a skilled eye can tell when they are 'due' the payout. That's offline, online doing that is far more difficult as you can't watch other people playing them.
Other than that distinction, i'd just call them 3 reel 1 payline slots, or at a push 'Classic' slots.

I'd have two categories - 3 reel slots (or classic slots) and then pub slots or AWP slots. The two are quite different so it's worth making the distinction.

classic slots for me
I would just go for 'classic slots' as 3-reel 1-payline slots is too awkward. I think pub slots can still come under this category.
wouldnt pub slots come under more "fruit machines" or "pub fruity" rather than 3 reel slots. Atleast here in the UK, anyway.
I think "classic slots" is fitting
