Companion App - never walk home alone

I quite like keeping up with technology and following start ups etc, but it’s not often i feel compelled to spread the news, but i came across an exceptional app today that i think is worth mentioning- Companion App

I think it's more aimed at women, but i don't see why men can't use it as well.

It basically lets a friend 'virtually' walk you home. All you do is put in your destination and select a friend/s to accompany you home, who will receive a link and be able to track your gps location as you make your way home. If you drop your phone, start running or have your headphones yanked out it will alert your chosen contact that you may be in trouble if you dont respond within 15 seconds. You also have the option to call the police in app.

There's been times when I haven't felt safe walking home, and this app is a great alternative. Feel free to share with wife/kids/friends it might make them feel safer next time they are walking home alone.

That way, when you're beaten up, mugged and *****, everyone will be notified something is wrong.

I can see why someone would feel safer with the app but...it actually doesn't change much. Is a false sense of safety a good thing?

I can just imagine someone on the other side of the world phoning the police and spending the next half an hour trying to explain how they know a complete stranger is being ***** 10,000 miles away

I don't think something like this would give me a false sense of security, but I think I'd feel better knowing that if something happened to me, my friends would know where they need to start looking etc. Not that I really walk around in unsafe places. Sydney is a pretty safe place. Most of it anyway. I can see how someone living in a dodgy place might want to use it though.

It shouldn't have, but this made me laugh. I'm in a mood today where most things are going to make me laugh. I'm going to hell.

I would have my wife or any female friends use this 100% for sure living where I do. I would rather have them feel a little safer knowing someone is there for theme all be it in the from of an app if they need them rather than feeling completely unsafe and uneasy .

I think it's a good enough idea and, although it doesn't make you 100% secure, it's better than nothing.

However, I think if you're in a vulnerable position or feel unsafe, phoning a friend and chatting until you get somewhere safe is probably slightly better.

It's interesting idea ... but I don't think it makes any user safe. A very false sense of safety.
It just means that they'll be able to locate the phone after you are robbed / kidnapped / killed.

I sorta agree Gooner, but sadly some people think smartphones and their apps are more important than people.

Its a good idea but i would love to see how it works in reality as Gooner said if someone does get into trouble how quick could the cops be there .. In South Africa I recon if you did have an issues you'd be in big trouble as you would need to wake our cops up first ..

It's a good idea, and it does help to an extent. But it would be much better to just call someone and talk to them while walking to the car at night, or making your way through a rough neighborhood, etc.

If you're on the phone someone can more easily grab you because you're not paying attention to your surroundings and you're not on guard.

Although I think both together would be good. If you're on the phone and something happens to you at least your friend knows exactly where you are/were.

I agree, it's not a security blanket but I can see some positives to its use.

I remember once I was witnessing a phone theft right from the hand of a young girl on the street, I was on my porch on the third floor when she started screaming and couldn't help her...
