How do you feel about cold email?

you probably get dozens of cold emails a month, what do you do when you get one?

the reason why I'm asking it that we're looking for a way to advertise our service and it all pointed to cold email.

There may be a couple more, but those are just about the main ones

You may have been better off saying from the outset what the mails will be about. But I'm guessing writing/translation/articles.

We provide the affiliate with a software to manage his affiliate account, track page views, conversions per page, etc...

I am pretty much in agreement with chaumi, except I would bin each one of his examples.

If 1000 people rented a mailing list and sent an email on Friday, you would consider the 1000 mails you got spam, no matter what the various offers were and there is very little difference in the outcome if it were 1 or 1000. You may think your offer is so great anyone would be foolish to ignore, but so do the other 999.

Also consider, if I have half a dozen or more various emails I check regularly each day, will I see the same offer in a number of them?

Any mailing that includes a click here, or send this specific response, or jump through any other hoop to be removed from the email list, is a clear spam mailing and shows the list was subscribed without permission, otherwise absolutely no need to remove.

Now getting offers from lists or sites I have signed up to, I do take the time to read. If I don't have time currently I keep it as unread or place in a folder to read later. In those cases the email should identify the site or service or brand name by subject line or from email.

I agree with permission based marketing and email, but emails from groups, sites or brands I didn't sign up for is not permission based, just unsolicited mail, or *****.

Well certainly if you are mailing to a handful of contacts you know personally, or have a preexisting business relationship with, then of course it is reasonable to send a mailing.

These would be sent from one of your own monitored email addresses and certainly would come from your main domain and brand since you are only mailing to people to people that know you and your brand.

If at this point the mailer has to ask themself, gee I don't want to risk my domain or mail server getting in trouble, well then, why would one think there is a risk unless they know there will be spam complaints?

The question remains, where did you get the email address?

A mailing to a bought, rented, borrowed or traded email list is still that. Not a list you owned or compiled from people that visited your site or other function and provide email contact details to YOU!

Some may disagree with me, but even a one-time mailing to a rented list is still an UNSOLICITED mailing.

Mailing a second time already proves the mailer has added this "rented" list to their own mailing lists, and whether you remove them or not, they were still subscribed and had to request removal to not be contacted a 2nd time.

Many of us with multiple email addresses get mailings every single day in our email boxes, that we also get in our other mail boxes. If it wasn't just the same old same old bulk mailings, we would NEVER see more then one (even though a high percentage of the one is still the same kind of bulk mailing)

The dozens of emails you mentioned in the first post, some of us get the dozens n a number of email boxes, so multiply that but a few factors.

I work as a link broker for a few gambling clients. We routinely use cold emails to reach out to website owners.
Where do we get the email addresses? In 99% of the cases we use the ones on the sites' contact pages or simply submit our message through the provided contact form (and we sometimes use hunter.io).
Our email is as clear as possible (while also trying to avoid automated spam filters) about our intentions: buy a link (in an article), the nature of the link (casino, betting) and that we intend to pay for it

On the other hand, our company website has a contact form... and boy, does it get submissions! The topics range from "we buy negative reviews" to "are you sure you have a proper sitemap" to "local data from Linkedin for $99" to (and this is my favourite) "IS ABSOLUTLY NECESSARY TERMINATION OF YOUR DOMAIN WILL BE COMPLETED WITHIN 24 HOURS"

The unsolicited link broker offers are CLEARLY unsolicited and clearly ****

And the majority of those, for the same offer I see sometimes 30 times or more, be cause they are in fact just using a rented list that was compiled and sold.

The simple reason for the 30-40 or more is that a few of the email addy's will end up on lists for 100+ domains so will be mailed to often ad regularly.

And you never email any site owner a 2nd time, a 3rd time, a 4th time or 100 times if they own 100 sites and end up on 100 lists you rented or compiled etc.

Of course, you send your mailings from your OWN domain and the reply goes back to the same domain that you are mailing from right?

Yes, we use our own domain for emails.
We try not to email the same website owner more than once (but it still happens, especially when there's nothing but a contact form on the contact page).

Pretty much everything has been sent, but that your success rate with such email largely depends on who you are reaching out to. Smaller sites and companies are likely to be more curious to give them a read as they are looking for all sorts new opportunities. Bigger ones on the other hand will probably not even bother checking.

What research pointed to cold email as being the best way to advertise your service? Personally I think you would be better off paying for Ad editorials or advertising in the industry publications for the customers you are looking for, or as you are now, introducing your product on specific forums. These will raise your profile and get your product in front of the traffic you are after.

Personally I'm surprised anyone keeps using email for getting traffic - I would have thought other social platforms would be more effective - but hey what do i know Does anyone under 30 even use email?

Generally speaking with me it ends up in the bin or doesn't even get passed the spam filter. If I replied to all the unsolicited emails we get I literally wouldn't have time to do anything else.

I do see a difference between a personal one off email and a generic email blast so occasionally we will reply to legit enquiries from people we don't know, but sales pitches tend to just get ignored.

We are getting 100 to 150 such mails per week, and i simply hit that X (delete button). However, i take exception when i get smarmy mails such as this (just pure and utter BS) - he backed it up 5 times!

I hate cold emails and can't be bothered with them at all. I just delete them and move on. Such a huge waste of time and very annoying. I get too much of them and they're exclusively about nonsense. It's been going on for ages.

Cold email is listed on many marketing / SEO blogs as a sure-fire way to get backlinks or visitors.

Cold calling / email may be an effective way to generate leads for selling products and services (if they are sent to potentially interested people, not casting a wide net and hoping to catch anything, of course).
But I'm not sure it works as a SEO / link building tool.
