Default How to rank for specific keyword?

Let's say you have a long tail keyword in your domain, which contains a combination of two separate keywords that can be ranked for Google. And from those two you optimize for the one that gets the most traffic. How can one achieve this - from anchor texts specifically for that keyword?

Give your visitors what they want, if they will be looking for a specific keyword you should give them information about it.

well, optimize your page for the keyword, like titles, articles and some media (photo, video) start to create links to that site with the anchor text (keywords) make it as natural as you can make it.

One way will be to study what the top 5 sites for a specific keyword are doing regarding keywords, description, title, anchor text etc. and use some of that for your site. However, this is an incremental process which may take some time before you have reasonable success.

Ok for example, I have domain: bestpizzaattheairportwithpepperoni.com - but only want to rank well for keyword "bestpizzapepperoni". Will I stuff this into my meta tags and anchor text to get that result?

if it's a long tail keyword, then it's enough to do SEO on page, and it will be excellent if you have some incoming links with this keyword.

What i do is I keep the long name as it is and promote it together with the breakdown of related keywords. having long keywords definitely has few competitors or has very few competition.

But we always must remember what people search for under your niche. In your example using the long keyword is itself the answer. I mean out of the thousands who search for pizza how many will actually want best pizza at the airport and with pepperoni toppings too.

No need to much promotion here. Probably there will be just two guys in the world who will actually have this kind of a niche. So the result will be you will always be there at the top of search.

So let's say you target a specific keyword by including it in your anchor texts. Then later on, you want to target a different keyword, do you change your anchor texts in order for this to take effect?

    Is it the same page?

When you say change your anchor texts, are you speaking in terms of existing links or new links moving forward, or were you talking about anchor texts on insite links?

If you change existing links, you could lose the ranking you had on the other keywords, so I would use that with caution.

That still doesn't clarify what I asked.

If you are talking about changing the keywords of your home page, are you adding more content to it based on those keywords, or are you adding additional pages that are based upon those keywords?

If you are talking about external links pointing to your site, I would say that acquiring new links based on the targeted keywords and pointing at pages that are based upon those keywords would be best.

Also remember the theme of the page where the link is coming from also matters. An example is let's say you have a page about slot tournaments. Links coming from pages that are about slots tournaments are better than links coming from pages about slot bonuses, but the links from the slot bonus pages are still better than links coming from a page/site about roulette.

And for those that will exchange links with anyone from any industry, the 3 links I mentioned in the paragraph above are better than links coming from a real estate site.

    Hi,
The keyword you target is not that competitive but the sad thing is that your competitors are well-optimize for that particular keyword. Being on the page 1 would be a tough job, It would take lots of money and link-building efforts for this.

    LOL@Rick's comment

Long tail keywords are no longer the same after MayDay update.

Google will basically weed out pages that are only optimized for specific long-tail keywords that cannot compete with short-tail in effort to filter out "landing pages"

    For example:

Before MayDay, BestGoshDarnPizzaPlaceInLosAngeles.com can rank when you search for

"best gosh darn pizza place in LA" or
"best gosh darn pizza place in Los Angeles"

But since the content is based on long-tail, Google can now realize it's a poor result for someone searching for "best pizza Los Angeles"

    Hope that helped!

    Colossal,

Besides the fact that your post was a little bit offensive, (this is a public thread bytheway)....

But since the content is based on long-tail, Google can now realize it's a poor result for someone searching for "best pizza Los Angeles"
The problem is, if in fact the page and site is a pizza place in LA, then Google is wrong to now say that the site should not rank for "best pizza Los Angeles"

Now I can understand the site dropping in ranking, but only if that is based in the merit of the site or page and not just because the site is optomized for a long tail keyword.

Why would Google think a site for a pizza shop in Los Angeles should not rank for those terms?

I personally think there is clearly something wrong with Google's thinking on this if in fact they now want to rank a pizza shop in New York over one in LAif in fact the search query contains LA and the page or site is optomized as such....

That breaks one of their prinmary rules of designing the site for what the visitor wants and not the search engines....

You just have to basically lazer target the keyword. What I mean is, identify your landing page for that keyword and always use the combination everything you link to it without any additional characters on either the keyword or the URL. It would also be a great help if you can land your links on pages with PR greater than 2.
