Portal sites must now have distinct host names to be listed in GPWA directories.

As webmasters, we all understand the importance of inbound follow links from topically aligned sites with good domain authority. For that reason, the GPWA has always encouraged members to let us know about their sites so we can link to them. A year ago we announced new features to make that easier in the following thread:

As stated in the above announcement,

When you are logged into the GPWA website, in the top navigation under My Account, you have long been able to select “My Portal Sites” to see the portal sites of yours that we currently link to. Now, on that same page, we provide a simple form you can fill in to let us know of additional sites of yours that you would like us to link to. Simply fill in and submit the form, and we will take it from there.

In the past year we've learned that migrating from a manual system where folks made requests by sending email messages to us to an automated system where members provided the needed information and pressed a button was not as simple as we had hoped.

Members frequently submitted sites that were already associated with them, frequently submitted the same site multiple times, and frequently submitted subdirectories of the same site as distinct sites. So, this past week we implemented some enhancements so those situations could be automatically detected, and the member told right away, rather than such requests being accepted for processing.

As part of the recent update we also changed the rules we follow about what qualifies as a distinct portal site: we now require distinct host names for every portal site listed in our directory of portal sites. So, for example, casinocity.au and casinocity.eu can be listed as distinct portal sites. And casinocity.com can be listed as a distinct portal site. But casinocity.com/andorra and casinocity.com/belgium can no longer also be listed as distinct portal sites.

Currently, there are more than 9.000 portal sites associated with GPWA members. Of those, less than 100 are for portal sites that do not have distinct host names. We will be following up individually with members to consolidate those portal sites so we don't have multiple listings for a single host name.

If anyone has questions about the new automation we have in place to better handle new portal site submission requests, or about eliminating duplicate listings for the same portal site, please let us know.
