    Default Calculating Keyword Density

Curious how everyone calculates their keyword density. I have always used free software out there that does it for me but was wondering, does everyone include words in the nav and sidebar? I know the auto checkers seem too.

Do you think the search engines are smart enough to know not to count navigation and sidebar words? In other words, do you count everyword on the page or just the words in the actual content of the page. The % could change dramatically depending on how you do it.

I agree. I write it as though I were talking. I just run it through though to make sure I have enough weight for a certain words I am looking for.

if you have it in the titles and h tags and inbound links then as long as the keywords are used a few times in the content, naturally of course, then it doesn't really matter mate

I'm Pretty much the same as thebookiesoffers

I write the piece without thinking (too hard) about the keywords.
Then make sure that the title and the h tags match the content keywords.

I've never bothered with a keyword count, weight or ratio calculation ...
It seems pointless to waste time on it - as no-one knows what the ideal value is anyway.

If you "Stuff" keywords your text will not read naturally.

The whole point is to make the text read naturally... while including your keywords.
That my friend is the true "Art" of SEO...

When writing content I recommend to have 3-5 keywords in mind that you truly want to target.
The key after that is adding proper tags, headings, meta's, etc...

Having a schedule for creating fresh content (weekly, bi-weekly, etc...) will help keep you ranking well.

The biggest mistake I see are people who do a great job of keeping their site updated with quality content , then fall off the map completely.

So as long as you don't stuff keywords, keep creating fresh content on schedule, and stay on top of your tagging , you should be good to go.

If you do want to check the keyword density of your page content SEOQuake is a good tool for it and very simple to use. It is a plugin for Chrome and Firefox and it works very well..
