Business cards - do's and don'ts

I'm in the process of ordering new business cards for my independent content writing business, when I thought to myself "what do people actually want to see on a card?" and "what will make sure it stands out?"

So, who better to ask than the people who receive tens if not hundreds of business cards at events.

I'd love to know, what makes a business card stand out and what critical-only information it should contain.

When I get business cards at conferences, I want to see your name, what you do, your website and your contact info (email and skype).
I also write notes on the back of the cards to help me remember what we spoke about as paper can get lost, so it helps when the card doesn't have a film that prevents pen ink on it.

I don't use them anymore at conferences. If I want the details of someone, I just write them down or add the person to my Skype at the conference.

When I used business cards it was a guarantee for shitloads of spam mails of people claiming they met me at a conference.

When I get business cards at conferences, I want to see your name, what you do, your website and your contact info (email and skype).
It helps when the card doesn't have a film that prevents pen ink on it.

Personally I think business cards are old school in this digital age, and most people will either take your card for politeness and then throw it away later, or lose them, which translates to wasted trees.

If you decide to stay in contact, then exchange emails and then you and they have each other's digital contact that you don't lose or taking up space in your pocket.

Put your logo on one side and relevant contact information on the other, name, email, skype etc. Keep it nice and simple.

All the expenses in this industry business cards aren't one of them, I must have been to 10+ conferences and still have plenty left from what I ordered when I went to my first conference.

Also I always have a few business cards in my wallet at all times as you never know who you will bump into in you day today life. Plenty of times people ask what you do and say that sounds interesting, always good to have spare business card on you so they can take a look the next day.
