Default Brand new site - where to start with SEO?

Hi all, long time member, first time builder!

So I've taken the lockdown time to teach myself Wordpress, and will have my first site ready on Saturday.

I know nothing about SEO, and really want to teach myself the basics. As such I have subscribed to SEMrush and looking at Google Analytics, although its all blank at the moment obvioulsy - I'm feeling my way around them.

However, what do you think are the essential basics for getting started in SEO? How do I get my site to show for certain keywords, and how can I choose what keywords they are for example. Are there limits to page sizes, or number of pages? How often should I add new content? Should I always use variables of the keywords I want to rank for in an article even if it doesnt make for good English?

What about things like Headers and Tags? They mean nothing to me.

    Those kind of things.

What are your basic essentials that you feel you have to do to even have a chance to get noticed and ranked by Google? Nothing too in depth, just the basics for now!

    Cheers!

I'll give the answer most people won't give you. Ignore SEMRush and all other things like that for a year - do nothing but focus on content and user experience. Once you have some traction and have built some trust, then you can dive into optimizing specifics.

Yea, That's actually very good advice. Took me off guard there. I'd make sure to write meta title, and description. Also, keep each page for a specific idea. The most important thing to do is write for the reader. Then optimize.

Apart from checking out Google Quality Guidelines https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35769#3, i'd take a look through some of the content produced by Neil Patel https://neilpatel.com/ which gives good advice for specific topics, in blog and video form.

I would focus on the same thing. Focus on literally just building out the site and the user experience for at least a year, then start with the off-page.
That's what we've done successfully now for a couple of times. Good luck!

First at all you need to optimize your content with keywords, know what audience likes to consume, improve your HTML code with some meta tags and all this stuff that which are important

Many English casino sites are NOT unfriendly, and to make a blanket statement like that is incorrect.

And actually after having reviewed thousands of sites over the years, and many multiples in recent months, I have been reviewing a lot of Japanese as well as sites targeting many APAC regions.

What I have found is that more often lately, affiliate links that actually send visitors to the reviewed operators, are much harder to find. Whether they answer the visitors question or not is clearly one thing that content should focus on, and I agree that teaching deposit methods can be effective.

But not actually providing the visitor a referral link and method to visit the operator they just convinced the visitor to join seems to be severely lacking, and if a site does a good job of showing the visitor HOW to deposit at a specific operator, and then does not show them how to visit that operator with a link, they may just open a search engine, look for the operator by name and be a direct type in, or end up landing on anther affiliate's site and use their link instead.

I am not singling out any particular site in my comment above, but it is a trend I am seeing more lately, and seems to be more prevalent among those targeting APAC regions.

End point is, don't forget to close the sale, and provide a link, and give the visitor a method to actually take action.

TheBoyMitchell, you need to find the right keywords for your site, focus on social media advertising (I do a lot of this and it's helped me to a fair length) and you need to keep building on the content that's suitable to what you're looking for. This is what's worked for me personally. Good luck with your site.

@casista - What makes you say that English online casino sites are unfriendly? Quite the opposite in fact. You have to give an explanation and not just say something uninformed like that.

Well you will need some time to start seeing any results. Firs of all I would recommend you to determinate all your categories. If would be useful if you could share your website so we can recommend you something. However the first thing you need to do is to secure your website. For this you can use some wordpress plugins and connect your website with CDN like CouldFlare. After that post regular blogpost with good keywords. You can find keyword on semRUSH. And don't forget to get quality backlinks from websites that post casino content.

    hey Neil.
good luck with the site sir.

here's how I would approach things fwiw:

    1. user research
    2. build user personas
    3. map persona needs to topics
    4. build out pages which answer all these topics
    5. enrich your pages with relevant phrases and keywords, headings, subheadings [prioritized based on avg search volumes]
    6. Add some Ctas
    7. optimise using some 'on-page' technical optimisations [schema, breadrums, hreview] for enhanced SERP listings

    tech stuff

    ssl / letsencrypt
google tag manager => use this to install analytics tracker
add click tracking on all links [as 'events' in google analytics]

    rank tracking
    - ahrefs/semrush, set up some keyword tracking in your target geos

    links
    - earn links to your website from semantically relevant sites. Ideally links that money cannot buy...
    - branded [yourdomain, yourdomain.com] anchor links
    - organic anchor links [various anchors]

    good luck.

do your homework [backlink tools + some time] and you will find :

    - there are some guys using link earning tactics that work 100% (rather not name them here)
    - much of the pack is using gimmicky PR tactics which might work 5% of the time imo. doesn't scale
    - The big players are just buying links from "naive" webmasters [stars, oddschecker, etc etc] and using PR techiques.

There is no secret sauce. open a backlink checker and ask yourself when you see links - does this scale? you have to find the happy space where you can scale organically in addition to other tactics [paid links, sponsorships, social, blah blah]

there are some gray / deceptive tactics people earn links with - a lot of bait and switch is standard in SBook.. have a look at 301 redirects to some of the big ranking sites...

Thanks for all this. Lots to digest.

If it's OK I might contact a couple of you with the url to follow up some specifics. Sadly not at the moment as I've run out of contact lenses and so can't see to write!

Thanks. That is exactly what I'm going to do with my brand new website. Content, content and content. I'm not going to even install position tracking.

    Default Periodic table of SEO

I've been doing this for 9 years. If you are new I would start with the Periodic table of SEO at https://searchengineland.com/seotable and make sure all your elements are top notch. After that it's linkbuilding and working on that website forever, if you are really dedicated, motivated, talented you will some measure of success. And one more thing, the most important thing about SEO is to DO IT, not just talk about it. Good luck.

Btw there are two SEO courses you can take for free at the moment.

Blue Array has one (https://www.bluearrayacademy.com/cou...-certification). Just use the code "wegotyoucovered" at checkout.

Moz Academy also has one https://academy.moz.com/. The code for this is "wegotthis"

I guess I will just mirror everyone else. User experience and content is crucial but that is developed through time. Content is the kind indeed but without the correct
backlinks added you need to spend fortune on content and time. If you want to build a successful website you need to employ people to do things you can't cheaper as otherwise you will spend a lot of time trying to learn how to do everything when some cheap freelancer can do for cheap. Anyway good luck with your project.
