Looking for a new Hobby

With a bit more time on my hands I'm looking for a new hobby, and am looking for some inspiration!

I'm looking for something that is not sports/fitness related as i already do lots of that and i don't want to be a slave to the PC/Computer, so I am looking for something more practical to do.

What interesting hobbies or past times do you have that might give me some ideas?

A few years ago, I became very active in the community and volunteering, and became president of a residents' association. I worked closely with all levels of government, particularly at the municipal level. My goal was to build a better, safer, more involved community. Since undertaking the responsibilities, the neighbourhood has completely changed. The city recognizes us as a vibrant community with great spirit. Over the past few years, I have been recognized for my efforts and achievements with the following awards and medals:

- April 2025 - Governor General's Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers
- April 2024 - Medal of the National Assembly of Quebec
- August 2021 - Community Service Recognition Award by the Canadian House of Commons
- July 2020 - Top 123 Remarkable Canadians by the Governor General of Canada
- April 2014 - Montreal Community Cares Award - Community Leadership

I don't do volunteer work for the recognition, but knowing that my efforts are appreciated by everyone I am involved with is rewarding. Giving back to the community or whatever your cause may be is very rewarding and a great hobby.

Baking. It’s definitely not related to sports/fitness, but you do need to like cooking at least a little. I’ve also noticed that it helps a lot with socializing; many people will want to try what you make or talk about it.

Apart from that, I don’t know if it counts as a hobby, but I’m also doing language exchanges to improve my pronunciation. I definitely recommend the experience, not only for the learning, but because it’s very interesting to talk with people whose realities are totally different.

My favourite hobby is knitting. I do it after I finish my working day, it is relaxing and that's how I feel my batteries. I like it because you do it something creative and practical. I knit winter caps and scarfs, leg warmers. Y0ou have lots of tutorials on how to do that so I suggest you should try this out.

Any recommendations on materials for beginners? I’ve tried to learn twice: the first time the yarn was scratchy and felt cheap (even though it wasn’t), and the second time it was so delicate it kept fraying, so it wasn’t practical.

For context, I want to make accessories that need to be tied and untied repeatedly.

I guess it really depends on what people mean by a “hobby” — some think of something physical, while for others it’s more about collecting, learning, or preserving something meaningful.

Personally, I collect old black-and-white photographs. Over the years, I’ve managed to find some rare ones, including pictures from the Second World War. I even have a few original photos by Kinszki, one of the most well-known Hungarian photographers of that era.

What fascinates me most is the feeling of connection with the people who took or appeared in those photos. Some of them even have handwritten notes or dedications on the back — when I read them, it feels like I’m reliving their happiest memories through those images. It’s a beautiful and almost spiritual for me

I think hobby is a disgrace. Man needs to create something to overcome his own finity and meaninglessness (or meaninglessness of his own life). All people are brainwashed by propaganda. Like we are brainwashing the heads of potential gamblers, everyone at least in the west is brainwashed that he has to have a hobby, e.g. life-work balance. And I think this trend is spreading all over the world even to hard working Asia after it decimated Europe. To have a hobby = you are a good passionate customer, who will eventually get rid of his income.

So getting a hobby is a just a painful way to suicide, and at the end there will be just a regret before death. Nobody knows indeed until his final days, but as I saw people dying, e.g. my father, I saw them regretting what they have not done. And the regret was not about not having more hobbies.

I believe the a man has to work. The more success he has, e.g. the more money he has, the more he has to work (contrary to the belief, that the money make some pillow, after which the other people have to work for the person who has the money). The richer and older he has, the more longshots he can allow to do.

I am fascinated by people from the past, who for example dedicated their life to construction of something they thought it is meaningful, e.g. a cathedral (which for me is totally useless). Their passion went sometimes so deep, that after their death they donated everything they had to the unfinished project they worked on.

I know that starting to talk about Elon is like starting to accusing someone to be like a Hitler (= the debate ends). But does/did Elon or Jobs have hobbies? They simply work hard, so hard that in the end they can sell their own effort in a physical shape, or their own brand to the people, who want to buy their hobby as a shiny car or a phone. I would never buy a tesla or iphone for this reason. (But without Starlink I am lost.) But they are/were true geniuses, who certainly were 100% dedicated to the thing they are/were doing. Neither had time for hobbies, nor the urgency to have a hobby, because their work was much more interesting for them, and in the end they sold it to the plebs.

I admit that there is something in hobbies. Men need to fulfill the curiosity they have. To learn something new. To test the borders. But hobbies without the transcendence are just a childish games that usually make money to someone else. And when they are for free (or almost), they are the vehicle of society that make people impotent, because their function is also to be a lightning rod of creative energy that is destroying the society. e.g. hobbies are the way to preserve the status quo. It is well known that in countries where was the socialism, people had nothing to do, so they had hobbies and it was supported by the nanny state, because "Idle hands are the devil's playground".

The problem with promoting a stupid gambling is that one needs to be really stupid to not see how meaningless is to sell this destructive product to other people. The mental excuses why it is not meaningless are really weak. So the urgency to forget about stupidity of the world and his own (through hobbies or other human action through temporary memory loss) is much greater than by doctors, constructors or scientists for example.

I never had a hobby (not counting sports which are necessary as cleaning teeth; not counting life in different countries, because it is an investment; not counting tea collection, because I have no time to drink it and I am a fckin hypocryte), so I was chased by this emptiness more and more as the business grew. I am trying to resolve it during last years (not going to be a doctor or scientist) and the only thing I regret is that I did not start sooner, when I had more energy/was more healthy.

To physically build some structures with passion means to accept the past, when something was built or invented for future -> to add one or more bricks -> to leave the world peacefully.

But ok, if you really want a hobby, instead of my stupid talk, I would suggest gambling. It goes straight to the point of losing money without detours. Straight to nothingness, which in many cultures, is a way how to be existentially reborn! (Sorry I have no better selling point than this.) I can provide you a link to a nice bookie or casino...

Hey! I’ve got a hobby for painting. I’ll be honest, I’m not exactly great at it, but I love doing it. I’m not planning to show off my paintings or anything, but it gives me a real sense of satisfaction. There’s something about playing with colors that just feels good for the soul. You don't have to have some kinda skills or blessings for it you just need a box of colors and a paper. Sounds childish but trust me you will enjoy it for a hobby.
