Default Does blog commenting still works?

Is it still worth it to comments on different blogs to improve your page rank?

Are they general blogs or gambling related?

Are they wide open that anyone can create an account and comment?

Are there hundreds if not thousands of others who have commented on the same blog making it full of spammy comments full of spammy keyword links?

Or is it a direct connection with some one you possibly met through the GPWA that has a quality website that might allow well written articles that happen to have a link or two pointing back to your website to a page that has content similar to the topic written about?

It depends. For me it is a great way to comunicate with my readers and adds value to my articles. Besides that a lot of readers get back to my site when someone replies to their comment, and it also is fantastic in terms of user signals.

Another advantage is that comments help you to improve the quality of your blog posts....eg i had an article where i was writing about a very specific promotion. Unfortunately i didnt update the article when this offer expired, but thanks to my readers feedback i could update the article in no time and avoided giving wrong information. You even can use the comment selection for sales!

The majority of blog commenting platforms now either remove the comments from search engine visibility or add anti-spam link attributes to any links embedded in them.

This spam strategy has not been effective for Google in over 10 years.

I thought all comments in blog posts are no follow now? Plus, most of them require the author to approve comment. It seems like a waste of time to try to get links this way. Just my 2c.

That's a question I also raised on a different thread - there are some "abandoned" spam blogs, which are now used only to spam backlinks in the comment section, the links are do-follow and any one can add a comment. The issue is that they may look quite temping - they can have over 30 DR lots of referring domains and even actual traffic. However I guess google knows better than to pay any attention to.

If the comments are high in quality and are on relevant blogs which have authority, sometimes. I haven’t had much luck with it myself, but I do know people who make it part of their regular strategy.

I'm amazed that blog comments are still thought about as a valid link building "tactic" in 2020, let alone considered.

    some food for thought

    1. Can a blog comment and link combo not offer value to readers , and add extra info the the OP's post.?
Perhaps an author even updates the body of the article to add your valuable link.... suddenly that nofollow "waste of time" is a lovely dofollow in-content link.

    2. Maybe google ignores the nofollow on the link, because the site is well curated, and google treats the nofollow as the hint that it is, rather than the directive it once was.

    3. Referral traffic from comment-based link building /earning can be huge, and laser targeted, and worth a lot of $.

    4. The sites you comment on rank for the stuff you want to rank for (if you choose wisely).. So comments here can work too to lead the customer to your door.

    5. People who see your comments /link might be the linkerati. they see it, they like it, they might link to it. If you don't do it, they never see it

"Link building" is not just about search engine rankings, 'dofollow links', 'google juice' and manipulation to rank on organics.. @ OP !

See the big picture, and maybe you will come to the conclusion that you are missing out on a lot of value by NOT including comments/blog engagement in your overall traffic strategy.

I think you make a valid point, DDM, but if we're talking about blog comments as a pure link building "strategy" - then no, they don't and won't work.

What you describe is more lead generation.

If there is a post/article genuinely compels you to comment and you have an interest in, then yes, by all means comment.

There needs to be a distinction made here. Comments for link building V's comments for lead gen.

I personally wouldn't bother, especially given the company I work for, but even then, I wouldn't use them on my own site.

Some good points being made, so the simple 2 word answer to the question is,
    It Depends!

As is with so many things seo related. there are many factors to look at.

Diversified links from many sources tied in with other good seo practices, not just a simple case of follow or nofollow.

Blog commenting needs to be done very carefully, if at all, and only on quality sites that will not suddenly be flooded with tons of comments all vying for links.

It may be more effective if used more for brand awareness that actual links.

If done incorrectly, it could lead to oblivion
