Redirecting non targeted visitors

Hey guys some cliff notes on this please

Lets for sake of argument assume i have a Greek site with Greek content and a .gr extension, now, you know most readers cant understand the language so you only have use for the Greeks, how do you go about monetizing all that other traffic that might come your way? do you redirect it to your English site, do you use a splash page in English? several pages in several languages redirecting several blocks of countries to native languages? Assuming you don't want to have bi lingual content and your choice is to redirect and how do you do it??

There are plugins for stuff like this if your site is built using a CMS such as Google or Wordpress. Off memory, I aren't sure of the name of them, but they exist. Basically, you can set a specific page to show only if the site is being visited from a particular country. For instance, if for some reason you have a list of bonuses unique to Greece, then you can geo target a piece of content to only show to Greek traffic....And so forth for other countries. This has benefits...In that you cater for the particular traffic you receive, but also downfalls, in that you have to create a lot of variations of each area of the site, and if the site is large, that can be a massive time consumer....If I find the name of the plugin I will post it

I've used the GeoLite database which is free, but it can take a bit of work to set it up (you need some programming experience or hire someone) and you need to update it occasionally. But it works very well :

So then if you don't want to worry about creating non-Greek content you can redirect all non-Greek visitors to an affiliate link. Even better, choose an affiliate link that has geo-targeting, eg. I believe bet365 will automatically display a landing page in the language of the visitor, they have quite a few languages.

There may be an SEO problem if Google doesn't like you redirecting visitors automatically, but it might be OK since your .gr site is obviously only for Greek visitors...

If you use geo-routing then you will send away greek speaking people who are living (or visiting) in other countries ...

I would do what sites such as amazon and expedia do - leave the person on the site they clicked through to, but the use geotargetting to show the user a big fat obvious message that says something like:

"It looks like you're visiting from the UK, would you like to go to our UK site?" - then provide a link to alternate content.

That way it's the users choice.

Here's what I see when visiting amazon.com from the UK:



That kind of thing.

You could hand code it using the free database from maxmind, but there are also plug ins for wordpress and joomla that'll do the job. Here's a decent looking one for wordpress, although I've never used it myself: http://www.epikmedia.com/epik-geoip-...geted-content/
