FYI on Backlinks for newbies et al

Here is how important content is:

I posted 4 articles on gambling to 5 different article directories 8 days ago.

Google reported to me on my web tools page this morning I have 65 new backlinks. (not bad)

My Go Daddy "hit list" reports 265 visits to my site (combined) from the associated article directory URL's and my articles have been republished on 6 other URL's with backlinks yet to show up on my daily report.

Need backlinks? Get to work

Here is a friendly warning about Buzzle. In their editorial guidelines, they state:

"Articles that are already published online will not be accepted."

Further:

"At the time of editing a pending article, editors will search the Web to check if article already exists on any other website. If it does, or if it is wholly or partially plagiarized, editors will delete the article submitted on Buzzle.com. . . ."

On Buzzle I give them a special rewrite, wait two weeks while they waste their time trying to be Sherlock Holmes then publish it everywhere else. They think they're so cute.

A couple of years ago, Buzzle suddenly started to decline all of my articles. Then, I read their "revised editorial guidelines," and discovered the reason why. They were checking to see if I had published my articles elsewhere, which I had been. Live and learn.

Is it a good or bad idea to submit articles that are already posted on your own website?

Does the similar results issue with google really matter when submitting the same article to different directories? Are you just going for the backlinks and not SE results with these articles?
