Have slot machines in pubs in places like the UK and Australia contributed to the stability and growth of the gambling industry in these countries?

I'm not sure if pub fruit machine numbers are even considered? though some are running branded software the majority are still traditional machines dressed up

Yes, pubs have become reliant on poker machine revenue. Australians love to gamble.

We've had slots in UK pubs since I was 15 (that's over 40 years!!). There are much bigger jackpots now. I don't go in pubs more than a few times a year now...but cannot recall any recent visit where I actually saw anyone pumping coins into a machine.

I'd say they have little to do with progression into other forms of gambling, though of course there would be exceptions.

Decent sized jackpot machines in football/snooker clubs etc have been popular since I was a kid, where I grew up they used to have two machines in the football club I used to spend most of my time in and I know that those two machines contributed more than the sum of all other revenue including the bar.

Whether that's changed massively in more recent times with the internet/FOBTs etc I'm not quite sure but I expect they're still bringing in decent revenue. Expect they're a tiny percentage in the scheme of things though overall.

Never been to the US but seems to be very different there. They may have them in supermarkets/airports and whatnot but we have clubs/pubs in every suburb packed full of them.
