Hi -
Does anyone have an opinion on whether domain extension affects your SEO potential. For example do .org and .ltd extensions work as well for SEO as .com?
Thanks,
Mark

Besides .com .org & .net, and "country related" domain name extensions such as .ca .au .de etc, I rarely see "category related" domain name extensions such as .shop .world .life etc ranking anywhere in the SERPS.

I recently bought some .us.com. and .uk.com domains. Freebets.uk.com ranks on the 1st page for free bets and that's quite a competitive keyword.

Domain extensions means different e.g. org. - is for organization, extensions that define countries often add to make bilingual sites.

I might be wrong, but I don't see the reason why some other extensions (but not all) apart from .com and .org wouldn't rank well.
If you have good, unique content, well organized site, and rest of SEO work done right, there would be no problems. Just my opinion.
I think that the extension domains don't matter at all, back links are important
All domain extensions are treated the same except for country-targeted domain extensions - these are unable to rank well globally and they give a certain boost to ranking in their own country.
So, .io for example is the same as .com.
That's as far as Google is concerned.
Users tend to only accept .com and their native country domain (.co.uk, .de, .fi...) as "real" domains. Anything else confuses them and they can't even type it into a browser with their dumb fingers because they don't even know where the browser bar is or what a URL is. Try explaining to someone verbally he should go to mywebsite.info. They'll ask you if there's a @ sign behind info and is it on Gmail. Or if it's mywebsiteinfo.com.
Also, you want to make sure you're the #1 website with that name. If you own casinofun.info but casinofun.com exists and ranks well, then they'll get the traffic from people who are actually trying to find your site and are typing in "casinofun" because they remembered the name but forgot what the extension was.
It's best to think of the user, not of Google, when deciding what domain name and extension to use. Country domains are my favorite.
