What Has Changed Over The Past 5 Years?

The title says it all. I have been away from internet marketing for about 5 years so I have no idea what has changed in the SEO world. Most important to me is what has changed with onsite SEO? Basic dos and donts will go a long way for me. I am planning the biggest project I have ever done so I want to make sure I get it right from the very beginning.

Thats a crazy question. Nothing was easier then rank a website 5 or 6 or 7 yrs ago. *cry
Probably the best way to enter the "new" SEO is a long night with useful reads about penguins, pandas, hummingbirds and his creepy family.

Seriously, take a blog like https://moz.com/blog and try to start.
Maybe the points of interest:
Build sites for users, no bot will risk a bet!
If you can deliver good content in a regular quantity over a long time, you will need (almost) no link building
Of course if you try to enter very valuable keys you need link building.
In total: try to build a good website for your targeted audience, avoid the short cuts and go ahead.

Since the website will be mainstream (sports news), I am sure I will receive natural backlinks. I'll be sure to get a few good backlinks from providing content to other news sites.

What happened in the last five years?

The internet got busy.
The industry got competitive.
Bigger corporate interests got involved.
Black hatters, scraping, and negative SEO concepts grew.

Viral marketing using social media seems to be the breakout technique to get noticed.

It's totally changed but, generally, the rules are still the same.

Many updates come in last 5 years like EMD, penguin and panda updates which change the many things in the SEO industry like anchor link exchange, reciprocal link exchange. Now you have to update quality content on the website regular which is very effective for website ranking.
