Google keyword planner is all I've ever used and is sufficient for my needs. I think it works ok as a general guide.
SEMrush have a good tool, but that is about $70 per month.
Yes Google Keyword Planner is probably the best.
ALSO look at Google 'Search Console (Webmaster Tools)' to see where your website is ranking. When you see the queries list in the 'search Analytics' section you can understand what Google thinks about your website.
You can buy premium software, but TBH google keyword planner is all you need
how about using the "related searches" in google in addition to keyword planner, or are the results there just the same?
Google keyword planner, though there are some paid tools out there that give a lot more options. On the other hand they are usually geared towards medium to big companies.
We have a lot of paid tools at our disposal - it is surprising to find out that eventually through all the mess of data that they provide, they are too using base information from an API accessing Google adwords keyword planner.

Regarding tools that are strictly for keyword research, I use Keyword Planner and Ubersuggest.
Mostly, though, I play around with tools like SEMRush and Ahrefs, which give you a pretty good idea of what terms and phrases your competitors are ranking or trying to rank for.
Keyword planner, ubersuggest and answer the public. Google related searches can also be helpful.
I'am using Google Keyword planner and I am fully satisfied![]()
If I knew a very good option other than the google keyword planner I wouldn't share it.

I use semrush and spyfu. You can get a trial of semrush if you wish but it's well worth paying for after.
