I've recently been turned on to this fantastic resource and I have to spread the word! If you haven't heard of it, it's a colaborative project by millions of webmasters to catch spam bots, commment spammers and e-mail harvesters:

If you're using joomla with sh404sef you can just activate it from the configuration and automatically block 'bad' IP addresses that the project has identified. Non joomla users can insert code manually.

I was getting a bunch of comment spam (moderated so it was never really posted, but still - it's annoying!), started using project honey pot and *ping* it stopped!

Honey Traps have been set! Mwa ha ha ha ha.

I have been a member for years....

I don't post much but will look up ip's occassionally.

In fact I was there earlier today since I had seen an ip in my fastclick stats that followed a whole lot of links and sure enough the ip was l;isted as the purity search bot that has a hsitory of not following robots exclusions.

This made me want to file a report so I did a whois on the ip and filed a report with the host, and with the report I also sent a link to the page with the report on that ip.

It's a great resource.

That sounds like a geat idea. I'm getting at least 100 comment spam every day (sometimes 300!) so i desperately need something to help. Do you know if they have Wordpress support?

I do not use any of the project's automated tools, but it is a great resource for lookup.

For bad spammers, don't forget about the rbl's etc at Spamhaus.

I use Joomla myself, but a quick search of the Wordpress plug in site returns 5 results. Some are just for participating though (honey trap links) but some do the IP lookup:

I've also used this for years. It's a good tool for sussing out whether your visitors are spider bots too.. Didnt realise it could be used as an add in for stuff liek joomla. I really should pay more attention.
