Default 14 times honesty might not be the best policy

Broadly speaking, it’s probably best to be honest. It’s a good rule of thumb.

But there are certain situations in which telling the truth is the worst thing you could possibly do.
Here’s a handy guide to some of the situations in which you should keep the truth to yourself.

    1. You don’t think your girlfriend’s new dress is very flattering

Ask yourself – does she have another dress to change into once you’ve destroyed her self-esteem with a negative comment? No? Then shut up.

    2. Your teacher is asking if you know who graffitied on the science block

You know full well that the Year 10 nutcase is the guilty party. But you’re sure as hell not going to attract attention by snitching on them.

    3. Your friend asks if their home dye job is as terrible as they think it is

Telling them that they look like they have a dead skunk on their head won’t fix their hair. Tell them it’s not so bad, but get them to a proper hairdresser as quickly as possible
    .

    4. You haven’t done that report yet because you were messing around on Facebook

But if your boss asks, it’s because you had an urgent email to deal with.

    5. ‘This cookie I’m eating isn’t the one that fell on the floor, is it?’

    No. No it isn’t.

A friend is asking your opinion on the ex they just dumped 5 obvious physical signs that someone is lying to you

There’s still a chance they might reconcile, so keep your harshest opinions quiet for a few weeks until you know they’re definitely not getting back together.

    7. Someone asks you at their party if you’re having a good time

Even if you’re bored rigid, you say yes, you’re having a great time.

    8. You don’t fancy someone who’s just asked you out

    Name: li5.jpg
Views: 265
Size: 14.1 KB

Don’t say it’s because you don’t find them attractive – they’re already having to tolerate a rejection, so at least try to cushion it.

    9. A friend is showing you something they created and asking your opinion

If you can give them constructive and fair criticism, mixed with praise for the parts you like, then go for it. If all you can think to say is ‘I don’t like it’, then keep your opinion to yourself.

    10. ‘What do you think of my wedding dress?’

There is only one possible response to this: ‘YOU LOOK BEAUTIFUL’.

    11. You hate your friend’s new partner

There’s no reason to tell them that unless they’re abusive, or unless said partner hits on you. Learn to tolerate them, because you don’t want to be the person who doesn’t get invited to the wedding.

    12. You think someone’s hobby is weird

And what makes you think it’s your place to pass judgement on their hobbies?

    13. Someone is upset that no-one is celebrating their birthday with them

Even if they start crying, you STILL need to keep quiet about that surprise party that’s
    been planned for later.

    14. Your boss wants to know who’s been using up the office envelopes
