Why Cant I ReDirect This Page

I have two bad links pointing to my website from another website. The links are pointing to domain.com/Slots%20Express%20reviews and domain.com/casino-deposits/usa-american-express-online-casinos/Slots%20Express%20reviews

In my htaccess page I am trying to redirect them to the homepage but for some reason it is not working. I tried it with and without the trailing slash at the end of url.

Here is what I put in my htaccess:

Redirect 301 /Slots%20Express%20reviews/ http://www.onlineslotshub.com/
Redirect 301 /casino-deposits/usa-american-express-online-casinos/Slots%20Express%20reviews/ http://www.onlineslotshub.com/

Any idea why that wont work? I keep getting a 404 for both pages. I have a feeling its because of the % sign but I do not know what to do about it.

%20 is a space. Try replacing %20 with a space and see if that works.
If that doesn't work, try replacing the %20 with a +

Do you have anything else at all using those paths in your htaccess that would make it skip those?

OK maybe something else - since those pages are a 404, perhaps you could just make it so that any 404 gets redirected to the homepage?
Surely that should fix it?

Not that I know of. I am thinking it has to be the % signs but that is exactly how the page shows in GWT as an error.

Travis I dont have Renee Skills but have taken your post and sent it to our Dev team to Look at for you .. If you give me some time ill try get you some feedback soon but they are incredibly busy as soon as they have a gap they will Look at it for you and see if they can suggest a resolution.

Ah yes, that would be an option. How does one go about doing that?

For pages that have a redirect on them to a specific page, would that still work or would all pages get redirected? Meaning if I have a page I renamed for example, would it still go to the new page or would it go to the homepage?

My advice would be to create the pages on his server, and on that page add the following code on the top of the page: I am assuming that the site is written in PHP if not let us know what language its written and I will provide the correct code for that

Firstly, I’ve checked the backlinks for this site and don’t see these 2 links he’s referring to.

But let’s say they are there, and there are only 2 of those, I would really not worry about them, it shouldn’t have any effect on his rankings.
A 404 error page is a pretty standard response for these types of requests and Google knows how to deal with them.

Let’s also presume he’s considering them bad from an SEO perspective, if so – why would he then want to redirect the “bad link juice” to his homepage and essentially cause more harm to his site?

I personally prefer setting up a 404 page like he has, instead of redirecting all 404 results to the homepage. This way should he attract numerous such links (perhaps in the form of a negative SEO attack), at least he keeps those attacks away from his main pages.

To further try and answer the question below, the %20 is URL encoding for a space, he could try substituting those with actual spaces to see what happens, although that might break the rule – haven’t ever tried that myself.

He should also try -

I wouldn't recommend creating the pages. He needs a solution that will work if these appear in mass. Creating a new page is not practical.

It may depend on where in the htaccess you put it, or how you implement it. Usually in code the commands are executed in order. So if those other 404 redirects are in the code before the other 404 it might work. JackTenSuited posted a link to a plugin. Maybe give it a try and see if it works. Worst case it doesn't work how you want it to and you can uninstall it.

PHP is not my learned language so I can't help too much with it specifically, but we will find something that works eventually. I'll hit up Rick to see if he has any advice. He is a bit more on the ball than I am.

Did computer science at uni and was a web dev before starting here. Although that was so long ago times have changed, I was self taught in the web dev stuff so its easy enough for me to just look at code and be able to learn it in a few mins.

It's always something simple. Sometimes you just need someone else to look at your code.

Since there are so many I do not want to redirect them to my homepage I do not think, just because like someone said above I do not want to pass anything negative to my homepage.

I have just been to webmaster tools an noticed a similar thing.

AmazonAWS is a cheap hosting platform (run by Amazon) and is well known for all sorts of spammer / scraper bots.
I just disavowed the entire domain.

Hi All,

Good news and bad news on this issue. I never did find a fix for this but now the pages and bad links have disappeared other than the one I put here on GPWA - ha figures - right?! Somehow the only link now pointing this this non-existing page is this thread. I know I could have them probably lock this so it would disappear after awhile, but just being the person I am and always trying to fix something and maybe learn something, I still would like to figure out how to fix this.....

Anyway, I still have this page showing as a 404 error and still cant figure out how to redirect it and fix it.

If they are bad pages just let them 404, why do you want to alter that from some scuzzy refferals?

404 is a valid marker for page not here?
