    This defeats the purpose of including the link, though. Linking to another site demonstrates to Google that you recognize the difference between good quality and poor quality. And therefore, pages on your site are likelier to be good quality.

    But if you're simultaneously telling Google that you don't trust the external link, which is what adding the nofollow attriubte does, you're sending an awfully mixed message. And adding nofollow to your links doesn't do anything to preserve your link juice, if that's that's your goal.

    Thanks for that Randy. Guess I'm following a more old school train of thought. I'll look into this further. It's likely the case that we use 'no follow' more for links to operators as opposed to authority links like Gamblers Anonymous etc.

    Well, also keep in mind, that's just my opinion. It's just one signal among a couple hundred anyway, and who knows how much weight it has, if any.

    A mix between nofollow and follow external links is always healthy for the site. What I would do is doing authority, gov and non-competitor links as follow and if have to do competitor links/references then just set them as nofollow.
