Links are still one of more important metrics but instead spending whole time lookinf for new backlinks I would foucs on Content which can give you backlinks naturally. It seems to be like impossible but it isn't. If you have really great, outstanding connet, people links for you. You can think about that like pareto principle 80% of time fo conent and 20% of finding backlink opportunites.
