Regarding Domain Names

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on here...

I have made quite a few websites over the past years and one thing I have not been able to master is; how to get a domain name registered economically?

Do you guys just use one of the major hosts and pay monthly/yearly?

Any help is appreciated,

The physical registration of a domain name is an annual charge, with some registrars offering a very small discount for 2 years over the cost of 2 1 year registrations.

Different Registrars charge different amounts, some as low as 7 to 10 dollars annually even though most have increased closer to thr 12 to 15 dollar per year range, with some quite a bit more. Also keep in mind that some TLD's cost more then others.

Also some registrar's may actually be a reseller of one of the larger groups (such as SRS/Tucows) even those that offer what appear to be lower pricing.

You may find at times that some web host offer special where the cost of registering the domain is hidden within the hosting fee, as part of a hosting special, and the domain could appear to be virtually free or close to it by continuing to host with them.

I personally keep the majority of my domains at a registrar that is not the cheapest but has provided me with pretty good service over the years and I am comfortable with. I do have a few scattered at a few others such as godaddy etc, but have been migrating most of them to either my registrar reseller account or my other main provider.

I've gone the cheap road (reseller) before, only to have said reseller bought-out. In turn, that created a nightmare, when I went to extend the registration period. Not saying that happens in all cases. However, for the sake of saving a couple of hundred a year (over multiple domain registrations), I opted to stick with a company I trust, who I've used for many, many years.

I use a few providers, but personally the best one for me is namecheap. Never had any issues with them and they charge fair prices too alongside professional customer service. I renew my domain names on a yearly basis.

Cloudflare has decent prices for renewals and easy to manage options for SSL, privacy etc (beats Godaddy and most mainstream registrars).
Other good budget options are NameSilo, they have good bulk prices and free privacy protection included.

Can second name silo. Good service and support too. Cant do .co.uk domains thought I dont think

I can third namesilo, decent pricing.

For .uk if you have 100+ it’s cheaper to get your own Nominet tag (threshold is probably lower now since everyone raised their prices). There’s a sign up and then annual membership cost but domains are at wholesale prices.

If you are going to use cloudflare services on your website then cloudflare now offer registration services, but only for existing customers and possibly only for domains moved to them (not registered with them yet). You won't find cheaper because they add nothing - a big fat zero - to their own cost. They do this 'at cost' because you are already paying them for other services. I expect cloudflare to become even more accessible as time goes on, coz this a new thing for them and they are rolling it out slowly.
