I am sorry i didn't inform you about my traveling to Africa for a program called "Empowering Youth to Fight Racism, HIV/AIDS, Poverty and Lack of Education,It as been a very sad and bad moment for me over here and the present condition that i found myself is very hard for me to explain.
I am really stranded in west africa here in Nigeria because I forgot my little bag in the Taxi where my money, passport, documents and other valuable things were kept on my way to the Hotel am staying, I am facing a hard time here because i have no money on me to clear my Hotel bill, I am now owning a sum $2000 for my Hotel bill.

I need you to help me out with a sum of $3,500 urgently so that i can arrange and travel back home,I need this help so much and on time because i am in a terrible and tight situation here, I don't even have money to feed myself for a day which means i had been starving so please understand how important and urgent i needed your help.

I am sending you this e-mail from the city Library and I only have few hours, I will appreciate what so ever you can afford to send me immediately through Western Union or Money Gram and I promise to pay back your money as soon as i return home so please let me know on time so that i can forward you the details you need to transfer the money through Money Gram or Western Union.

And that is what Chas W. told me when I questioned him about his email to Gamble Stop. His hotmail account got hacked into and some "wankards" sent out the email.

I nearly fell for one just now!

Scared me shitless to start with i can say ...

    From HM Revenue and Customs

    Issue: Unreported/Underreported Income (Fraud Application)
Please review your tax statement on HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) website (click on the link below):

Asked me to follow a link and respond, glancing at the direction the link was taking me i saw:

    xxxxxhttp://online.hmrc.gov.uk.neaazax.com/SecurityWebApp/httpsmode/statement.php?blahblahblah

the very first part was all that registered in my mind and looked coshe

Then i realised, hang on, i never made a tax return ( i mean i never made a tax return recently )

Then i realised HMRC is not the friggen tax man but the vat man anyway.

They have been running this campaign for over 6 months now. I guess the lottery scam campaign doesn't work for them any more

One thing is clear, these guys know how to get the spam emails into the inbox, LOL. Might as well use the expertise to make some money by not scamming people.
    Cheers!

This is scary stuff and the sad thing is there are so many people out there that fall into the trap as well and lose life savings etc!

Thank you for the heads up Shaun, I hope that your friend gets her account sorted out very soon!!

Hacking a hotmail account is quite easy to do and done through phishing exercises. Basically the recipient who is to have their account hacked is sent an ecard from someone like hallmark to their hotmail address. To view their ecard they must continue with their msn login (ie. re-entering their password). Their password no matter what is entered takes them through to view the card. It is very likely the user unknown to them enters their real hotmail password as the site they visit looks like hallmark including hallmark in the toolbar and hey bingo they have your account creditentials...

You may have missed it, but something like hundreds of thousands of hotmail, gmail and yahoo accounts usernames and passwords were posted on the internet last week or the week before. This is likely how this happened...

A friend of my sister also had the same email sent out from her account about a month back. That was definitely from doing what Simon described. I can't believe people still fall for these bullshit scams.

    That is so scary!

I once had an email from my cousin in Canada, saying how she was stranded in Hong-kong and needed my help!

Thankfully the terrible English helped me see the scam - lets hope their English doesn't keep improving! otherwise we could all be in hot water...
