Hi all!

I am thinking of starting a 'gambling portal.' I have a few other Wordpress-based blogs/sites but as gambling has always been an interest of mine I thought a gambling-affiliate site could be the next step.

I am considering a site with reviews, offers, sign-up etc, backed-up with regular article,s tips etc. I will NOT be offering any gambling facilities of my own.

What I would like to know is that do I need to register anywhere to do this, or need a license/certificate?

I know Adwords have some rules, but I am not seeking to use them, as I prefer to let my SEO do the talking, or have links from other sites.

My other question is that which comes first....the site...or the affiliates. Is there a customary way of doing this. It seems to me that most of the affiliates need you to have a site ready-to-go.

You do not need a license however I would advise you to feature a disclaimer on your site. As for your question the site or the affiliates?...

From reading the description of your proposed site, I assume you are referring to affiliate programs not affiliates? If so then every program will choose individually whether to accept or reject you as an affiliate. I personally will still accept affiliates with sites in progress

I wouldn't bother joining a load of programs. Instead I would push 2 or 3 and let the others come to you. By then you should have enough traffic that you can negotiate deals on your own terms and likely a better deal than the standard advertised on their website. Also its easier to make money from only a couple then it is a dozen.

I would stay away from sub affiliate links...(yup will likely get slammed for that) Join on your own if you can, unless the affiliate is going to give you something back in return for signing under them e.g links, mentoring, etc. Call me selfish, but I see no reason to allow someone else to make 5% off of my sites without giving me something in return. Of course most subs likely amount to only a few bucks each month, but if you end up making some decent cash, that 5% can amount to quite a bit over a year. Im not putting the idea of subbing down - but if you get to the point where your making your main affiliate an extra $500+ per month, they should be helping you out in return or in the beginning. Its a two way street - you help them and they help you.

Thank you for these replies! My project is still very much at the planning/information gathering stage so these are useful tips. I will checkout that website.

Regarding sub-affiliates, at this stage, as I am in need of a little directions are (dare I say it) mentoring, I am not against the idea of subbing as it is, as said, a two-way street, and then my helper is then incentivised towards my succeeding.

This seems like an excellent forum, a store of information and informed advice. I will have a good look around and hopefully focus my ideas.

I am not quite sure yet what 'earnings' are possible from this kind of enterprise, so am unsure what proportion of my time to allocate. But that is information I can pick up and hone as I go.

I rarely disagree with Kaus but this is one of those times.

Subbing costs nothing so why not sign up under someone so they can benefit from your players? I do agree with her that if someone mentors or assists you, they deserve the courtesy of a sub link. Those $5 or $10 commissions can add up.

That site kaus recomended is a good one to get a general idea i remember taking a look at it when i first started. So many variables and things to consider when starting out I don't want to discourage or overwhelm you. Good luck!
