Default Loot Boxes & Under Age Gambling: APCW Perspectives for 25 October, 2019

Loot Boxes & Under Age Gambling

The crusade against online gambling continues in the United Kingdom,
as the Children's Commissioner is pushing for regulation of "loot boxes".
Her request comes despite an update from the UKGC which shows that
under age gambling in the country is actually on the decline.
We also have updates on GPWA Anthony and Brexit.

Although these children say that it doesn't feel like real gambling to them, the problem is that they may develop a taste for real gambling later on in life which could easily carry on well into their adulthood and that's when the issues might actually begin.

I'm pleased to hear that the surgery went well for Anthony. I hope he will recover very soon.

Until next month, Jay Todd. Much appreciated.

I wondered why when I called Anthony said he would call me back after he was out of the coveralls and washed the grease off.

In UK pubs, the ones that are surviving are having to become far more family friendly, offering food, kids play areas (inside and outside) etc to encourage parents to come and spend some money there, so more kids are undoubtedly inside pubs.

I suspect a more systemic 'issue' (if you indeed see it as an issue) is what you find at the seaside. Go to any British seaside town and there's arcades which positively encourage gambling in some sense of the word, rightly or wrongly, with grabber machines, 2/10p coin pusher machines etc. It's undoubtedly huge business for the owners and the kids enjoy it, mine included. Is that right or wrong? Is it gambling or a bit of fun? Where's the increasingly blurred line?! Does exposure to this as a youngster instil problematic tendancies etc?

The arcades now dumb it down a little by offering tickets instead of cash prizes, however that still drives a behaviour for some kids to want to 'win' to accumulate more tickets for a bigger prize. Not sure there's much distinction between that and loot boxes or whatever personally.

I see it as a systemic issue too .. the whining of invested "do gooders" that are convinced that people are unable to fend for themselves or think through a situation. Government and bureaucracy serves only to inflate the importance of their own efforts.

It serves their purpose (inflated self importance) if they can find OUTRAGOUS SITUATIONS in everyday life that MUST BE CHANGED and it's especially useful and publicity worthy if it involves children ... WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE KIDS ???

The anguish is stupid, the pain is not real.

    -----------------------------

It's like the climate change kid Greta who wails away about the impending HUMAN CATASTROPHE with hundreds of thousands of deaths likely in the next decade and CLIMATE EMERGENCY that MUST BE AVERTED - and how all the adults are STEALING HER CHILDHOOD because she is in such a BLIND PANIC about the situation.

Yes - the Earth is becoming hotter, and wetter - and it's an environmental change almost certainly influenced by having 8 billion humans on the planet - but we are able to adapt to the rising water levels through simple planning and rezoning of settlements.

We can't affect our outputs easily without destroying our economies, so we need to focus on adaptation and mitigation. Sea levels have rising and fallen by hundreds of metres in the past and will do so in the future.

What will Greta and her cohort of extreme armageddon seeking visionaries do in 2030 when no such human catastrophe occurred? I suspect they'll have already jumped on the next OUTRAGE BANDWAGON leaving town.
