Default Australia To Ban Ads For Online Gambling Within 3 Years

Ads for online gambling should be banned across all media and at all times within three years to combat the manipulation of an “impressionable and vulnerable audience”, a parliamentary inquiry has recommended. Full article here from the Guardian.

All 31 of the recommendations are in the 'You win some, you lose more' paper here: https://parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo...oulosemore.pdf

Australia is turning... rephrase... has turned into a wet-#ss nursing country.

The latest Federal goofs have decided to outlaw vape shops, more specifically nicotine. I stopped smoking over 3 years ago, and only managed to do that with nicotine-juice. 45 years of trying everything.

My mate just got on the vape and now, he'll be back to smoking.

I guess the Gov must be losing their precious cigs tax.

FYI a pkt of 20 Marlboro is AU$38.

Australian tobacco taxes generate around AUS17 billion per year in tax revenue. Tax was levied on smokes because of medical cost to the public health sector. However, so much tax has been added since, it's 7x more than it costs the Gov., in medical expenses due to smoking each year.

Yes, just another Federal Gov rort.

Gov., losing tax is clearly the catalyst, nothing else!

Used to smoke years ago, was astounded at the price here in the UK when a smoker told me recently - still not as expensive as that though! Just looked, 20 Marlboro red here are about £14 so that's what around AU$27.

To add salt to the cut, these same goofs gave themselves a pay-rise a few weeks back.

And the fact that the government could lose huge tax revenues from gambling - it's nothing

What I don't get is you can bet thousands of dollars on a pokie machine or sports bet but you can't play a $20 poker tournament online. How does that make sense? Poker is a strategy game it's not for mugs.

As for this news, I am not sure if this is the right solution, but sports betting advertising was getting out of hand, especially when you're watching sport on TV.

They don't get tax from online poker.

Agree, the ads are out of hand on TV sporting events.

The amended 2017 GIA, all came about because AU licensed sportsbooks; who are the culprits for these ads, were taking wagers for in game bets. Which, has always been illegal. That sparked the online gambling fire in 2014. These places are their own worst enemy.

I get that but what's stopping them from having a regulated market like some states in the US?

Like most Gov., officials, they don't live in the real-world. Common sense seems to allude these goofs!

This is only the start. Australia has often been the leader and first to implement restrictions in other industries, such as tobacco which has led to other countries to follow.

History repeats itself, but I guess nothing was learned. Bans only open a space for black market, and black market services, where the only people that benefit are those offering the services.

The government gets no money, those using the services get no protection of any kind.

There is a lot of truth to that. When you ban advertising of the licensed and legal brands, players won't know the difference when they are doing a google search or finding a website that is rating bookies and casinos.

Not sure that this conclusion could sound even more severe
