    Hello,

I am back with one more question, I guess it came up during my sleep.

We know how to use copyscape, but how do you find out that your page has been translated or worse your site. Lets say there are 100 predominant tongues. And some like Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Arabic, Thai, sanscript, Russian, Greek,...,use different alphabets or writing systems. Is it tractable?

And let me give you a nightmare case. Someone translates your site or part of it in Bulgarian. One year later you translate your site in Bulgarian. Now google sees duplicate content, but you seem to be the copier as your material appeared afterwards!

I'm not aware of an automated service that could help with this. The best that I could think would be to auto-translate a few of your pages through Babelfish or another automatic translation service, then upload the translations temporarily so you can run a copyscape check on those pages. The translation will likely be different in many portions due to differences in word choice, but there might be enough similarity at certain points in the translations that copyscape would still be able to identify the duplication.

Hmm this is all very interesting. I have one site that copies EVERY SINGLE one of my stories, and another that just does it regularly.
They always link back to me and and i ALWAYS delete their trackbackss. I just assumed that it worked to my advantage because i get another link to me (unreciprocated) on Google.
    Should i stop it?

YES you should try to stop them!

You should report them to Google so that Google knows you are the original source (otherwise you risk a "duplicate content" penalty).

You should try to work out how they are copying.

By the sounds of it, you are using a Wordpress or similar- it might be as simple as they are using your RSS - make sure your RSS feeds are "excerpt" rather than "full text" - this will stop them from being able to grab the entire content of your posts at least!

Otherwise, they may be simple copy/pasting your articles, which is harder to prevent.

Check out their pagerank too, is it really worth the backlink from them? I doubt it.

Well from everybody's concern everytime you copy an article please indicate the source. It's unfair for authors of those article have a none recognition from us.

    pokerseeker,

Simply copying an article and then giving credit is NOT ENOUGH.

You should NEVER repeat NEVER just copy an article (even if you give the original site credit) and think that it's ok.

NEVER copy without first discussing it with the author.

You never know, they may either give you permission to use the article (with credit of course) or they may ever write a fresh article just for your site.

Still can't believe in this day and age people think it's still okay toi steal content as long as they say where they stole it.

    NO, NO, NO and NO.

The same logic would suggest it's okay to steal a car as long as you paint "I stole this car from Jimbob on 47th street" on all the windows.

In my opinion, there is a special hell for content thieves and it's a bad one. I have already applied to run it when I pass.

    Hi All,

Although I also stand by the census that no one should copy content, it does present a quandary when people use others RSS feeds.

    • Where do you draw the line?
    • Content is content is it not?

We all say duplicate content affects our rankings but does it?

If that was the case, article sites, press releases, rss feeds...ect...ect, hell even SE's using our descriptions & or excerpts from our pages would be duplicate content too.

    Cheers

I don't use any service just copyscape once a while to verify if I'm copied .

Are the following documents good to start with in case of copyright infringement ?

Great information, and good advice for publishers who have copycats!

Open Directory was copied by a lot of sites like Google directory. What's the point for them to use it if a punishment goes to them?

Great thread. I just started using www.tynt.com. You install their script and they can tell if anyone has copied any text or images and published it anywhere else. It might help to I.D. thieves. Tynt also adds a bit of code that links the content back to your site - which could be easily removed I guess, if it were noticed.

Anyone else using it? Any results?
Here is a report from them (with nothing to report yet):

    Cheers,

    Bob

The code is similar to the Google Analytics code. Doesn't seem "messy" but I'm not a good judge of code messiness.
It seems to work as I cut and pasted a couple chunks of text and it showed up in the reporting. We'll see.

Copying makes me really angry, especially if they change a few words to change it and make it sound awful. I have also had two separate clients who ordered articles from me, published it, but never paid me for it. I have contacted the relevant websites but they never answered my e-mails.
