Betfred Own Goal

Signed up to Betfred today to try out the goals galore feature and have a couple of horse racing bets.
They have spent a shed load today having a couple of feature races at Haydock live on Channel 4 racing, and guess what, i try logging in before the Grand National trial to back Giles Cross and the site wont work
Can't login and the live help says there are problems with logins that are being looked into. I dread to think how many customers that has put off today

Paddy Power was out too ... Paddy claimed it was "technical issues" .... are Betfred also saying the same thing?

I'm just wondering .... Hmmmm 2 large bookies out on the same day ... DDOS attack fingerprints?
Or pure coincidence ?

I've checked with the IT team and they tell me it was an issue with, amongst other things middleware servers. I've also asked around and whispered the DDOS phrase to a few but no one is biting so I'm guessing a plain old run-of-the-mill tech error.

Maybe Fred's and Paddy are just "playing hard to get"...?

What is middle ware anyway - is it what hobbits use to send email?

I'd have to see the structure that BetFred is using for their website to be sure ... but generically "middle-ware" is the software that sits between the database functions and the customer presentation.

DATABASES (x5-10) -> MIDDLE WARE -> PRESENTATION LAYER -> INTERNET -> CUSTOMER

So if the "middle ware" is struggling with some of its access paths to the databases - then the customer can usually get to the basic site - but will not be able to perform the functions that are under load.

In this case think of middle ware as a "server" in a store or cafe. He can get things one at a time from the database - but if something runs out (say coffee) and then 10 people suddenly order COFFEE then they all have to wait. And bad software will also make other requests wait too - so even DONUT customers have to wait behind the COFFEE customers.

BTW - It's usually the "middle ware" that breaks under a DDOS attack because it receives too many requests to handle them all in a timely manner. But "middle ware" can also fail under load if it's been configured incorrectly or not allocated enough resources or something physical has broken reducing computer services.
