Default BetOnline hit by weekend DDoS attack

BetOnline Sportsbook clients were unable to activate their accounts for a good portion of this past weekend, apparently because of a DDoS attack.

    From BetOnline management:

"During the past weekend, BetOnline experienced some downtime and inaccessibility due to an attempt by a third party to disrupt traffic and site access. The issue was quickly identified and dealt with by our team of IT professionals. Your access to your BetOnline account may have been temporarily impacted during this time period and we want to apologize for any inconvenience. At no time was personal information, BetOnline account information, passwords, or financial data compromised or at risk.

Thank you for your patience during this time, and don’t hesitate to contact us at 1-888-426-3661 should you experience any issues.

    -Sincerely, The BetOnline.ag Team"
    And from Sportsbook Review:

Distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are common. Essentially, a third-party sends thousands of requests per second to a web server in an attempt to overload it with traffic and cause performance issues.

Sportsbooks and websites in general which receive large amounts of traffic are sometimes the recipient of these issues, but during the course of blocking these requests real players can experience delays until all normal traffic is filtered from rogue addresses. DDoS does not interfere with account credentials or security.

DDOS is common; shouldn't even be an issue with so many hardware based deterrent solutions around.

A competitor or a big pissed off client might be behind it.

Don't these places use DDoS mitigation?

You might be surprised at the scope and scale of DDoS these days. We're talking millions of devices attacking a site simultaneously. Huge companies like Sony, Microsoft, and governments have been taken down by DDoS in recent years. What does a gambling operator have resource wise to compete with?

It is an asymmetrical war where the attacker's costs are orders of magnitudes less than the defender's costs. ****** situation IMHO.

Yes, but even with such large scale attacks; large corporates often only go down for a few minutes or hours.

Github was down for only 10 minutes; the attack was a new record 1.5Tps.

It's the socially-engineered hacking that is the most threatening.

DDOS attack are common yep, even our website was down some time due to one of this attacks.

Important thing is that the users information remains safe. Big companies may be offline just for few minutes cause have huge IT services and lots of people working. But as far as I know, there is no 100% safe protection against this.
