    Question .cc gCC TLD?

    Hi, again,

I could only find .cc TLD for my site and later learnt that ".cc" is a generic country code TLD.

I have read many comments and ideas on the internet about this issue but I am still not completely clear.

I have one important question: "Site having .cc .net or .com TLDs have any effect on rankings?"

    Thanks a lot in advance

Domain extensions aren't a ranking signal.

I may be wrong, but there used to be distinction between country code tlds and generic tlds for Google.
However there was a list of domains like .tv, .la, .co or .cc which were de iure country but defacto were taken as generic.

However I think like 3-4 years ago this practice was abolished and domain extensions should not be the ranking signal anymore (but I am really not so sure about it).

Either way .cc was always like-generic, so do not worry.

    Hi Sherlock,

Thanks for the acknowledgement. You are right regarding the distinction issue. And as far as I searched, .cc is a generic country code TLD.

I am more happy to read your last sentence anyway!

    Cheers!

It's actually really simple to see what google thinks about it, login to your https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ ,click on your property, then in the menu on your left click on search traffic, then 'international geotargetting'.

With a country level domain you will see a pre-selected country in a disabled list, because it's automatically geotargetted and can not be changed. And otherwise, you can change it to whatever you want.

please note that google wmt expected shut down date is 13th of December 2018, so 1 day left to do it, as i could not find this functionality in the new 'google search console' ( https://search.google.com/search-console ) yet.

Thanks a lot. I have looked over it.

The box is not ticked and the country kist dropdown menu is inactive.

So I think I am safe from targeting any country!

    Cheers

Domain name extensions don’t have any effect on your rankings.

.cc is indeed a country TLD, but is one of those that Google recognizes as being used worldwide. Cook Islands only have 600 inhabitants, and people around the world are using .cc for cricket club, christian church, creative commons etc. so Google started considering this domain a normal TLD and not a country one. Same goes for country TLDs such as .co, .fm, .tv and many more.
