Hello guys and apologies if this is the wrong thread where to post this question.

For a big affiliate website which is the best choice in terms of CMS? why? pros and cons?

1. wordpress
2. drupal
3. others?
4. your own CMS (built from scratch)

Advantages of custom system:
Well, if you have the aptitude and means to build your own there are many advantages.

As long as you use clean and secure code, you will most likely build a much more robust and secure system that does not have millions of users reverse engineering the code looking for ways to take advantage of flaws they can compromise.

You will most likely NOT be subject to anyone knowing where the login to your admin is.

You will not be subject to the latest greatest wordpress compromise that is discovered every few weeks.

You will not be subject to the latest greatest compromise to that plugin that everyone told you needed to have.

Changes and customizations can be done completely in house.

Disadvantages of custom system:
Only you or your development team will completely understand the code without a great deal of time or effort.

You will not have the advantage of the thousands of plugins available for wordpress that you can use to slow down your site and get the latest greatest thing or option that hundreds of people will tell you you need.

Advantage of Wordpress or other popular CMS system:
Because there are so many plugins available, often development time for the latest greatest features you can't live without can be reduced.

A rather large support system for tech issues and questions exists world wide.


I really only touched the surface but I do think these are the basic pro's and cons.

I'm very confused if to hire an expert wordpress/drupal web developer (and so I will build the new project with worpress/drupal with pros and cons) or to hire a web developer to build my private CMS from scratch

Unless you're doing something very complicated or incredibly high traffic (where you'll want to optimise as much as possible) then the
simplest option is going to be an existing cms.

There are security concerns of course, but you just need to make sure your software (cms and plug ins) is up to date and that you take a few precautions (use a strong password, don't use 'admin' as your log in, enable a htaccess password on the back end and so on...).

I'm not a big fan of wordpress myself. I use it on a handful of sites, but (for me at least) I find joomla preferable. Actually in the process of moving one from wordpress to joomla as I type this... But lots of people feel the other way round, so it comes down to personal opinion I'd use whatever you feel most comfortable with.

Depending how big. For a huge website, I`m talking industry leader, tens of thousands of uniques per day, I would build my own CMS. At that level, I think you need to have full control over what you do, over the changes you would need to constantly make. As Universal said, building your own code (as long as the guy doing it knows what he`s doing) has a lot of advantages.

But, otherwise, I would go with Wordpress. Easy to get a handle on, super customizable, excellent optimization for SEO (huge factor), you will always find answers to problems given how popular it is. I`m very satisfied with this platform on which I have all my websites, including an e-commerce one which works flawlessly.

I run a lot of adult tube sites in the past. All based on Wordpress with up to 100k users per day each. Without any problem.
If you have a lot of traffic its not just a question of your CMS but your server structure and hardware.
