Connecting multiple sites
Hello GPWA.
I'm new here and new to the casino affiliate space. Iv'e recently launched a new project and i have a question regarding connecting sites together - how to do it and if i should do it at all.
I have built 3 casino sites, one in french, one in spanish and one in english. The design of the sites is the same but in different colorschemes. The sites have the same pages but in their given language. The sites have 4 main pages focusing on 4 different keywords. There is 6+ versions of each of these pages, on each site, each targeting a different country speaking the given language.
So far i've used hreflang to tell google what country should see what page - example:
So all the /online-casino/ pages have this in their head tag
spanishsitedotcom/online-casino/ hreflang=x-default
spanishsitedotcom/online-casino/spain hreflang=es-es
spanishsitedotcom/online-casino/mexico hreflang=es-mx
spanishsitedotcom/online-casino/argentina hreflang=es-ar
etc.
Now my question is: Can i use href lang to link these 3 websites together? so instead of just having all the different spanish versions of this page in the hreflang, i can add the english and french-speaking ones as well? So all pages across all three domains have all the different versions of the page (all different languages) in their hreflang?
ex:
spanishsitedotcom/online-casino hreflang=x-default
spanishsitedotcom/online-casino/spain hreflang=es-es
spanishsitedotcom/online-casino/mexico hreflang=es-mx
spanishsitedotcom/online-casino/argentina hreflang=es-ar
englishsitedotcom/online-casino/ hreflang=en
englishsitedotcom/online-casino/united-kingdom hreflang=en-uk
frenchsitedotcom/online-casino/ hreflang=fr
frenchsitedotcom/online-casino/france hreflang=fr-fr
I hope this makes sense, i'm not completely sure if i explained it correctly. Any clarifying questions please let me know.

Yes that's fine, ahrefs have a good guide to this. Just make sure all pages reference each other and you pick one clear default-x. There are tools you can use to check all the hreflang tags are correct, like technicalseo dot com.

It could confuse things if you have multiple hreflangs on 1x site, then introduce that site into another external hreflang group.
If the 3 spanish pages have identical/similar content in the same language, hreflang won't change much. Google will just fold the pages and prioritise 1x page for all the 3x spanish regions. You could be better of trying to localise the content and have some localised link building for each page instead and then using a general hreflang=es for that site, instead of:
spanishsitedotcom/online-casino/spain hreflang=es-es
spanishsitedotcom/online-casino/mexico hreflang=es-mx
spanishsitedotcom/online-casino/argentina hreflang=es-ar
For your English and French site, again, no point in having both hreflangs, you can just have generic =en and =fr
You can decide which is your primary site for the X-Default. Usually it is the English speaking one, but as you have a lot going on with the Spanish one, X-Default there could make sense.

Thank you for your insights.
Regarding x-default, is it necessary to have this? I can't just go with the languages of the sites in the hreflang?

Yes, you can use hreflang to link the three websites together. In fact, using hreflang in this way is a good practice to indicate to search engines the relationship between equivalent pages in different languages and regions. Your approach of including all the different language versions in the hreflang tags for each page is correct.
Your example of hreflang implementation looks accurate. It's crucial to ensure that the hreflang values are correctly set and correspond to the language and region codes. The x-default value is used for the default language version when the user's language or region isn't specifically targeted.
Here's a quick recap:
- For the Spanish site:
- spanishsitedotcom/online-casino/ hreflang=x-default
- spanishsitedotcom/online-casino/spain hreflang=es-es
- spanishsitedotcom/online-casino/mexico hreflang=es-mx
- spanishsitedotcom/online-casino/argentina hreflang=es-ar
- englishsitedotcom/online-casino/ hreflang=en
- englishsitedotcom/online-casino/united-kingdom hreflang=en-uk
- frenchsitedotcom/online-casino/ hreflang=fr
- frenchsitedotcom/online-casino/france hreflang=fr-fr
Ensure that each version of the page has the correct hreflang tags pointing to the equivalent pages on the other sites.
This approach helps search engines understand the relationships between pages, and it improves the likelihood of serving the right language version to users based on their location and language preferences.
