Hi - If keyword planner and AHREFs disagree on monthly search volumes, who would you trust better? e..g if a term is reported as 260 / month in KP and 20 per month in AHREFs. Which is more likely to be nearer the mark?
Thanks,

Neither... they are all so far off in search volumes, i think they crawl 2-3% of real actual queries and seem to favor old websites giving higher scores becuase they have crawled links for over 5-6 years whereas new sites that rank for higher volume and higher value keywords will show less even if real google results show otherwise..
What they are good at is giving you a rough Idea with backlinks, popular older keywords etc but if you are targeting serious money keywords you need to do it manually
Imo ... nobody. This is just guess with help of same resources. I've optimized on keys with zero volume and get 200 super valuable clicks a month. Also i have top 3 rankings for a "12k" key and there is almost zero.
Keyword research i regions of under 500 visits a month is for me more instinct and some logical thoughts than a "measurable" decision.

Right? in the real world there is also variations too.. i have one keyword that has a 300 volume by ahrefs yet brings in thousands of visits, these SEO tools were made to fill a gap once you get used to working without them so much more is achievable than worrying about artificial tool scores, btw I see Alexa has just started turing itslef into a serious SEO tool lol

Do what you will with what you will, but these days our kw research is done using LongTailPro and hrefs Content Gap. these are the lower hanging fruit that convert 3x better but takes diligent work.
20 yrs in gaming and kw's have barely changed except on slots, so we already know the Hollywood and primary terms. We'll integrate both of thsee lists together semantically to produce content.
