    Are cookies over-writable?
Is it not a second cookie that it created?, and the original cookie stays on the computer even when it has expired (or until deleted)

I may be wrong, but in most cases I find no cookies are actually 'over-written' just a new cookie is created!

The problem is when affiliate programs (such as 32RED) use the oldest cookie to track commissions!

If EVERY affiliate program used the latest cookie to track commissions then cookie stuffing would be less successful

And the last real referrer would receive credit (as they should)

IMO cookie stuffing is a form of theft. If our team determines an affiliate is stuffing cookies then we close the affiliate's account. Random stuffing, Geo targeting, IP filters, false impressions and clicks are tactics that cookie stuffers try to use to thwart detection. No matter if the program registers the first or last cookie. There's going to be cases where both the affiliate program and the affiliates will be affected.

Our program uses the latest cookie. This means that if you have a potential player who clicks your banners with our affiliate ID you are over writing a previous stuffer. The problem arises when a cookie stuffer stuffs the cookie after you've already placed one on the potential players browser.

Also consider the impact on the brands marketing efforts. Affiliates with a healthy understanding of the "big picture" will appreciate the need for the brands to spend their marketing budgets wisely and have a decent return. Our program could not offer the high commission structures if we could not rely on the non-affiliate based players. So, cookie stuffers act as parasites to others efforts.

So PokerXtra, there are ways to reduce the affiliates impact of cookie stuffers, but it continues to be a challenge for programs to identify cookie stuffers.

On the brighter side of things we've never had a GPWA or CAP member have an issue with this. SO, Picking good quality partners is important.

In order to overwrite a cookie, the cookie 'name' must be known by the overwriting program. So if some evil person was targeting a specific sites cookies, they should know the 'names' of the cookies they were targeting.

modifying a cookie(stuffing) means creating a new cookie, with the same name as the cookie you want to 'stuff' adding new data and then sending the 'new' cookie to the browser to overwrite the old version.

In most of the reasearch I performed on the cookie stuffing, the cookie name IS known since the stuffing often takes place by loading a hidden visit window that the visitor often doesn't know about.

Thus the cookie is stuffed by the visitor visiting the casino property *(even if they didn't know).

The web server is the same web server that placed the cookie on the visitors machine previously.

If an affiliate program is not small affiliate friendly (especially small US Affiliate), then they are NOT Affiliate Friendly!

Oh, what I meant is that it is not hard to find the cookie name, all you have to do is look, the cookie name is not hidden.
I was trying to point out how easy it is to 'stuff' cookies. The only piece of info you really need is the cookie name.
