This is the whole point in a nutshell. For me part of the fun of this game is the ride you get when you've got a whale on one of your programs for however long it lasts. Must be the gambler in me

From what I have seen the CPA terms often include aspects an affiliate would earn on anyways through a rev share deal, I always go for rev share unless its not traditional gambling, such as lottery.

Given the choice i'd always go for a hybrid, gives you a decent amount of money to reinvest upfront and the residual income thereafter is always nice!

For longer therms, the only reasonable commission plan is RevShare, sometimes a big player comes up and he can make really great money. CPA is for newbies I think.

I would add that - with Rev-share you must choose trusted & stable companies to work with, its a long term partnership so you dont want your account closed after everything you've done.

    I agree with Ocreditor,

First, there is of course no real answer to this question since it depends a lot on the money flow your business/life requires and that's something personal.

For me - it's all about the program. I need to have much more trust in the program for rev-share.

Third, if you can get hybrids- that's the best, but you need to send good traffic to get it.

I personally dont like hybrid deals because I get less rev-share (bottom line), but these type of deals are very good if you are an affiliate that buy your traffic (ppc, media buy) and must make sure you are balanced with your traffic expenses.

That's true. I meant the ones based on rev-share but with guaranteed CPA. Like $250 CPA or 45% rev share. whichever higher. So you are paid CPA for certain months, but lifetime it goes according to rev.

CPA or Rev share? Neither of them. Negotiate hybrid deals: CPA + lifetime revenue share.

I prefer rev. share. When negotiating CPA, I can't get rid of the idea that I'm losing somewhere. Also the conditions for a player to be qualified are sometimes ridiculous.

If it is casino or poker you definitely would go with Rev.share, if it is finance industry then it could be a bit tricky and CPA is in some cases better option.

Definitely agree with this although we've found hybrid deals few and far between. Maybe you need to be a super-affiliate before you get offered this?

We work on different deals depending on the products, verticals, and time that the product is on the market. I always think it’s a tough toss up between net rev and CPA deals because you lose out either way. The best method that we’ve found that works for both us (the affiliate brand manager) and the affiliate are hybrid deals that combine the two methods. I always find that to be the fairest way to do a deal. But that might just be me!

CPA or flat fee still has its place, if you're dealing with a company that needs brand exposure. Sometimes you know full well you won't generate high value players for some companies, but that's their problem. New entrants to the market need big advertising budgets to build brand awareness, and in any industry that's just what you have to do. So, CPA or flat fee benefits the affiliate in these situations.

Imagine Coca Cola paying you a rev share for every can you sold (great! millions of people buy Coca Cola every day), vs some new cola entrant to the market trying to get market share who was going to pay you $5.00 CPA for every new customer you put their way, but no rev share. You'd take rev share from Coca Cola, but the risk of not getting market share bourne by the new cola company is theirs, and it's not sensible for you as an affiliate to take that risk.

Sometimes you really have to dig deep and consider how much effort your client is putting into advertising on TV etc, effort into retaining customers, activating inactive customer accounts through promotions etc etc, before a rev share deal is a sensible choice. If you're taking rev share from a company where you're just going to attract bonus seekers who deposit £10 and no more, then take a CPA. It all comes down to who is taking the risk - you, the affiliate, or the advertising company. Remember, some offers are real loss-leaders, so taking a CPA will benefit you massively. Not to name any companies, but the "£10 completely free/no risk bet" was a real loss leader. We had THOUSANDS of new sign ups!, hardly any of which went on to deposit any more. A CPA deal in this instance would have been extremely favourable for us.

There seems to be some crucial points in this reply.
Obviously there are different types of gamblers, from bonus abusers to the whales, so the life time value of a signup has to be considered for any site with regard to this question.
I am new to the affiliate game, 1.5 months in, and I've started getting signups, but I am worried with revshare because I am seeing most people deposit, use the bonus bets they got and then disappear, I am hoping they come back to bet , for example they may return when the betting companies offer them some financial motivation (which a number of the Australian sportsbook companies often do). And I have had one whale come in and bet over $30,000 in a couple of weeks, but he has also gone. The loyalty is not immediately apparent, which indicates CPA might be the way to go.

Another factor is the competition, given the range of company options available to the Australian sports and racing gambler, with over 10 quality companies to choose from, I am worried that CPA would have been a better choice.

If someone disagrees please let me know! I actually do hope my revshare setups will win out in the long term.

@midas - it can be a frustrating game
my main business is casino/germany - and guess if i would sell 90% of my FTD´s for a usual €180 CPA i would be more happy in the short run.
Fortunately the missing 10% making the cake really sweet.

with a second website i receive hit from USA and Asia ... free signups like hell. super low conversion from signups to FTD - but there is a value per player in high $xxxx range (for sure the risk for loses too).

Every month i take a couple of CPA from the table - but the majority i get paid by RS
