Different Degrees Of The Penguin

I just read this article, which I will paste below. Matt Cutts said that there are different degrees to Penguin and he is speaking with someone on twitter and recommends him continuing to clean his backlinks.

Do you guys usually email webmasters that link to you to take down their links and/or use the disavow tool? I have used it twice, when I saw that I got hit with negative seo (tons of comment spam links to a viagraforum dot something). I have not been big on cleaning up my backlinks, I think that it can work against you in some ways. For instance if google sees that you are constantly removing links and using the disavow tool they may think that you were an old spammer trying to clean things up, which could cause more harm than good.

What are your guys thoughts on this?

I'm not a link builder. I don't go buy blog posts, I don't have forum signatures full of links. I don't email or PM about swapping or buying links. I don't go to fiver to get social links on the cheap. I don't go spamming up comments, nor do I play the "check out my new site and tell me what you think" game.

*** pause for those who are think link buiding is the only way to rank content and sites to feel threatened and compose themselves ***

With that in mind, if I get hit with a bunch of links, I simply disavow and move on. I don't waste my time trying to track down the culprit, nor do I give him any "attention". The people putting out the neg seo campaign are looking to both drop your rankings AND waste your time fixing the issue.

I've not noticeably experienced a problem just doing the disavow and then getting on with my day and I'm doing just fine.

If it is something I'd proudly show off, I'd leave it alone and call it helpful. If it is a link from a site that could be turned into the butt of a joke during happy hour, I'd have a pint, laugh it off, disavow and move on.

I'd look at the context and content of the linking site in general...it's pretty easy to tell a spammy site, it's easy to tell a good quality one...though not always so easy to judge what might eventually turn out to be a quality one

Also it's probably worth looking at the context of the link itself...anchor text, surrounding text etc
