I wouldn't want to have too many directory links (altho seen many foreign sites ranking great with mostly directory links. How? Beats me). Try to get the most relevant ones/with most traffic. Wouldn't go over 5% of the overall link profile with those type of links tho.

I would strongly disagree with the statement, that they are the best option. They are by no means the best option, however if they are relevant to your content, they it will likely not hurt to have some. Although I've read a recent MOZ post (can't find it atm) that in the long run these might be even damaging.
