I am Swedish and run a Swedish website!I find it to be easier to stay up to date with the market, regulations and trends if you are native, and to understand your visitors better. My experience is that they also will be more happy to leave feedback in their own language.
I currently do websites in both my native language and English. I stick to languages I can somewhat understand, which helps me oversee the content. I've thought about starting a site in a language I don't know, but relying on someone else for all translations and updates seems tricky. If I were fluent in another language, I'd definitely consider it.

I do both, but I use a professional translator for other languages.
