    Default Title Display in SERPs

    Hi -

For one of my top ranking keywords google is truncating the title which I think might be damaging CTR. Does anyone know why Google does this and if there is something I can do to remedy it? It still makes sense, it just doesn't look as eye-catching with the 2nd half of the copy missing.

    Thanks,

    Mark

Appears to be on mobile and desktop. I've checked UK and US - same in both locations.

No longer than others that show full length in serps.

I've just noticed though that Google is choosing to show full title or half depending on the search term used when it appears in the results.

I've never seen that before. If I type in the search term that is the same as the first part of the title, it shows my page with just the first part of the title in the results. If i type the 2nd part of the title as the search term, it includes the full title in the results list.

    Weird.

Google is making lots of changes. They recently increased the length of meta descriptions. Then after a few months, they lowered it somewhat. After everyone had re-optimized for longer metas haha.

It's such a chore to keep up with their desires

New pages will get their titles cut off when shown on mobile. Old pages will have that space given to them. Screen space is a very important element for keywords that have adwords attached to their results; even more so for mobile.

To put in layman terms, what this means is that only old, trusted pages will get more screen real estate for mobile.

Nowadays commercial keywords only have ads above the fold on mobile screens. This also means that in the next few years, organic traffic to all major sites is going to systematically decrease as the mobile search takes over the reign.

I agree with Malikbhai here. I also have the exact same problem when I'm using my mobile phone to open links that are too long and they tend to scroll right off the page, making it even difficult to manually select the link to copy somewhere else. Google is also only selecting the important part of the URL and at the same time, selecting the important keywords and shortening it enough to also accommodate mobile phone versions, as smartphones are becoming a lot more advanced these days and technology has come such a long way, even from only 5 years ago. The demand for smartphones is much higher than it has ever been before, especially for the Samsung Galaxy series. Apple, on the other hand, are trying to keep up with Samsung and their marketed products are quite good, too.

The strange thing is - google wants to shorten my title, but not my competitors! I'm not sure if this is putting me at an advantage or disadvantage - my title (as displayed by google) now exactly matches the keyword search, but misses a bit of extra info / call to action in the second part!

In my opinion, as long as it matches the exact same keyword search that you're targeting, then you really have nothing to lose or worry about here.
